Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:30AM, and on the road with a large coffee and bagel by 6:30AM. Arrived at Burns Park at 7:30AM. I registered for the 5K, and decided to RACE IT. Met Trix shortly after... My sister (Carrie), Charles and Dana arrived not long after! :)
Event warmup:

Talked. Talked. Talked with the girls and Charles! Also stretched and did 1/2 mile warm up with my Sister!!

Comments:

I positioned myself on the outside of the first row. Gun went off and I blasted out of the gate. My leg turnover was CRAZY. I felt good for about the first mile. Nine minutes in, I was 3rd place overall! The leader was only 25 yds ahead of me! Not sure what my first mile split was, as there was no mile marker. :(

Somewhere around the 11 minute mark my calf started to pull. :(

I tried to ignore the calf but my pace still slowed. My overall time at mile 2 was 11:50! By now I was running in 9th. I can't say for certain, but I just *know* that I had to have gone around 5:30 for that first mile!

Shortly after I hit mile two the calf started to seize up and I began to lose feeling in my foot. :( The same thing had happened in Portland where I first injured my calf. Instead of fighting through the pain - like I did in Portland - I frickin' shut it down. :(

I walked about a minute, got pissed cause everyone was zooming by, and jogged the rest of the way!
What would you do differently?:

Rest my friggin' calf!
Post race
Warm down:

Tried to stay WARM. I saw my Sister (she did the 5K), Charles and the Mafia girls finish!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My f'ing calf! I SMOKED the first 2 miles. DAMN. So. F'ING. FRUSTRATING. I could have gone low 18's and most definitely snared a medal!! :(

I don't think I worsened the calf today, I might have if I had continued to push it...but I will never know! I went for a jog this evening and the muscle felt tight. The only problem I have with it currently is when I want to go FULL BORE!

Event comments:

The race was very well run. Chip race, several aid stations, and great post race food.

Hanging out with the Mafia afterwards helped bouy my spirits! Such a GREAT group of people! :)

maybe start out a touch slower, have you ever kept a 5 :30 pace for extended distances?  if not, or if you are not doing any type of speed drills, this type of injury, or worse, will happen 90% of the time, you need to meet me to do speed work so you legs can last at  that pace. then you can kick ass and feel good at the end.

I agree with Lisa on the speedwork! (I shun that kind of activity over the course of a training plan myself ) Those first 2 miles were amazing, Greg!

Get those calves used to gunning it, and I think you'll solve that cramp problem in the future!

Most importantly though, you had a great time with friends and family

5:30's?  Whoa, there, flash, that's hauling ASS!  Someone call the MDOT, the road's torn up!  Sorry the leg didn't get the memo about the pace you were going to run...It would have been cool to watch you get the bling...

Rest, fight another day, and wish I had been there with the mafioso and mafiosa...

Hope that SOB heals up for you. Hell of a finish given what you went through. I think the decision to slow things down was the right decision at that time.  No sense f'in up your whole season over a 5k.  Keep hanging and get that damn leg healed up ASAP.
