Lake Charles Triathletes
77F / 25C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 27s
Overall Rank = 45/153
Age Group = M 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Wake, coffee, bagels, shower, shave, dress, and drive 90minutes.

Got there > one hour before the start but transition was already cramped. Squeezed in on a rack that already had five bikes, then when get bib, body markings, and chip.
Event warmup:

Too much hassle to unrack the bike, so I settled for a jog to the next bathroom by the campground.
Swim
  • 14m 9s
  • 574 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Haven't been swimming enough, so I just took it easy. Even took a few stretches withthe breaststroke, though I reall didn't need to.

Timing mats were at the transition area, so swim time includes the run from the swim exit. So my swim time isn't as bad as it seems.
What would you do differently?:

Train?
Transition 1
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Probably not more than a dozen or so faster than me here, and I fairly wekk took my time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 39m 56s
  • 15 miles
  • 22.54 mile/hr
Comments:

From the start I felt the tire rub, so much that about a half-mile in I pulled over to see if I could fix it. Couldn't find the problem, so it rubbed intermitently the whole way. Probably lost 30 seconds stopping to check.

Went fairly hard the whole way, passed a LOT of people (pays to be acrappy swimmer). Had to holler almost constantly for people to get to the right, on two occasions I had to cross the center line (not solid and no traffic coming) to avoid people riding too high.

Stayed mostly around and slightly above 23 mph. Coming back some young stud passed me doing 25, so I latched on about 6-8 lengths behind him and held on the best I could in his legal draft zone. Got maybe 3-4 miles out of that before he got too far ahead to be of any benefit. By then i was almost done.
What would you do differently?:

Not have a rubbing tire, but not too bad an effort, this is pretty much where i am right now.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Rack was nearly empty when I got back, so no problem racking.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, maybe focus on speed a little more.. .
Run
  • 21m 56s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot, hot, hot!

Haven't run much in th last month as I nurse the achilles, certainly have not run outside at all, so the heat was a big detriment. Mostly survival, trying to find a pace I could hold for the (hopefully) short duration.
What would you do differently?:

Train, get acclimated to the heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank about six Gatorades

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too much me and too llittle trainiing.

Event comments:

Lake Charles Triathletes put on a good race that can no longer be described as "bare bones." Chip timed (a first-time test run by the timing company), good food after and plenty of doorprizes, even though I didn't win one.

Good race for not a lot of training, especially the bike. Good luck with that achilles, I battled mine last year after after the gulf coast half, took forever for it to heal.

You coming back to Morgan City for the snake Bite Tri?
