So my first Tri was Sunday and in T2 I forgot to clip on my racebelt with my race number on it.  I got about 50 yards down the running trail and realized it.  I freaked out a bit and ran back into the transition area and grabbed it.

What should I have done?
Other than not forget it!

I wouldn't have run back...

Do you really need your race number if your not going to place in your age group?

Is that what the rule is about?  I did not know, and in the heat of the moment, I just kind of freaked out.  Lesson learned.  Hopefully in a few years it will matter when I am placing in my AG, but for now not so much.

I probably would have gone back too.   It's not just about age group placing.  Race marshalls need to be able to identify you in case of an infringement and is also has your emergency details on the back (if you filled them in) if something goes wrong.

Easy to say it doesn't really matter but if everyone did it you'd have a problem.

But I guess there must be some instances where people lose them in the course of the race and I'm sure the organisers accept that.

I'd have gone back.  Better to lose time than be DQ'd. Part of the race is getting everything done in the transitions that needs to be done.  Otherwise, you could just set up your own s/b/r and call it a triathlon. That's why it's helpful to practice a couple of times the whole T1/T2 as well.

Anyway, I bet you don't make THAT mistake again!

I put mine on first thing, under my wetsuit, I roll up the number under the belt and turn it to the back.  When it is time for the run I just turn it around to the front.  One less thing to worry about in transition.  It works for me.

Ran out of T2 still wearing my bike helmet.

I would have done the same thing you did...50 yards, I would go back and get it....not sure how that would effect the timing chips, though...

next time, stuff it in one of your sneakers

The only issue with running back it that your chip timing will be off/incorrect/not registered if you passed the timing mat the first time out.

a) is it absolutely needed? After all you are body marked with your AG and bib#

b) Timing chip DQ will occur if you cross over a timing mat again

c) lesson learned for next time...stuff your bib in your running shoes so you physically have to touch it to get your shoes on, thus limiting the possibility of forgetting it

I would not have gone back.  I would have gambled that the Race officials would not find me among the sea of competitors.

It's not a DQ for not having your race number it's a time penalty.  And quite honestly, unless you're at the pointy end of the field or so something to bring attention to yourself, you probably would not be noticed for not having your race belt.

I put mine inside my hat and grab them both as I run out of Transition.

Lesson learned right?

I did that exact same thing this past weekend.  It was my first Tri.  I ran back and grabbed it.  I was so MAD!!!

As I ran back to T2 one of the organizers was there and told me to run under the tape and grab it.  So I didn't go over the timing pad.

The race organizers said that they were ripping the bottom part of the bib for your times so I had to have it.

I will (hopefully) never make that mistake again.  I am going to shove my race belt in my shoes from now on.

I would not go back.  I believe the only reason for the race number is so that the photographer can find you and try to get you to buy their race pictures.  If you have a chip, that should be enough.  As another poster mentioned, I would be more worried about being DQ'd from screwing up the timing mat system.

Personally I would not have gone back.  I am always racing against the clock and backtracking would slow me down.  That and the complications of the transition timing mats.  If course marshals and/or RDs want to assess a penalty, DQ, or not give me an AG award so be it.  I will still know how fast of a race I raced (+ the 1 second it takes to grab the race belt).

Did you not have to wear your number on the bike? I had to wear mine on the back on the bike and then flipped it around to the front for the run. So, I had to put it on in T1? I stuffed mine in my helmet to avoid forgetting it in T1
