I swim at Will Rogers beach and am trying not to feel the fear as I have a scheduled swim tomorrow morning. I'm almost ready to cancel...

Any words of encouragement?

People swim around sharks all the time and don't even realise it.  They say often when someone goes parasailing they'll freak out becuase they'll see sharks swimming around people but sharks in general leave people alone so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Also if you can find a port area, that usually attracts dolphins and sharks are scared to death of dolphins.

It's an ocean.  There are sharks, octopus, giant squids, all sorts of things that live in those waters.  They've been there for years.

RARELY will you ever notice.  RARELY do they bother you.

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball

If you can outswim a shark you can outswim the competition.

I'd like ChrisM's opinion on that, but to me that absolutely looks like a Great White. They have a pretty distinctive torpedo shape. It's interesting that the article says they couldn't identify the species-- they obviously know the repercussions of saying "Great White".

I am not a Marine biologist but I would have to also say it looks like a large predator, Great White, Tiger, maybe a Bullshark. Great Whites are typically seen much further up the coast, but Tigers and Bulls are common in Malibu. You have a greater chance of being stung by a bee while you are out there swimming than being attacked by a shark. I know it's always in the back of your mind while you're out there but it is so far out of your control  you may as well have a care free swim. Make your peace with God and concentrate on your form.

I think you'll be fine as long as you stuff several raw steaks in your wetsuit before your swim.  Just make sure to have a buddy follow in a boat with a video cam so we can all watch the show later, okay?

that whole dolphins scaring away sharks is a huge misconception, sharks and dolphins eat the same things and are usually around each other.

i was a beach lifeguard and saw sharks swimming around people all the time, i have swam with them and never had problems. if it becomes a problem just remember you dont have to be faster than the shark, just faster than the slowest person.

A South African we have at our university asked what was up with Americans and Europeans doing cage dives with Great Whites. He said that the locals know that they won't be bothered by them and just have a nice normal dive.

Ah c'mon, how are you going to sell that around here?  Most of us have seen that episode of "Flipper" where he saves people from the shark.   Wink

I'll be at Malibu next weekend for a OWS and, frankly, I'm going to be more worried about seasickness. Go Dramamine!

I just remembered my girlfriend is at her dad's beach house in I think Huntington Beach.  How far is that from Malibu, because I feel I should mail her a dolphin.

As for Sharks and Dolphins.  I believe sharks don't dig on dolphins along with many other creatures.  I also somewhat feel there may be a human dolphin connection.  No proof of course but I rather be surrounded my many dolphins than I would 1 shark.

THAT IS ONE HUGE SHARK!

Since it's in Malibu, I heard sharks eat people, but then run to the ocean bathroom to hurl...you know, to keep there figures. Oprah was talking about having sharks on her show that have eating disorders.

This one might qualify.

Got a source for the bolded info?  Been diving here for years, familiar with the local species, not aware of anyone ever seeing a tiger or a bull  in Southern California, while I am sure there has been a sighting here and there, they are not common here.

I read the article, if it's 10-12 feet most likely a great white.   But, as others have said, they've been around for all of your open water swims.  Just cuz you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there.  And, if great whites were in the habit of attacking humans, there would be hundreds of attacks every year.   And there aren't

Yeah, highly unlikely for a bull to be there, possibly a stray tiger, but unlikely given the water temps.

I had my swim scheduled because I was convinced that it would be no problem. THEN... I had like 3 nightmares about the damn shark that I canceled and went to the pool. I feel so stupid BUT I was more than just a little apprehensive about the whole thing!

Next Sunday though - I ain't flaking!

I'm thinking large water animals may be more harmful when they are just having fun.  It's sort of like cars.  If they're relatively indifferent to you on your bike you do fine.  When they awkwardly try to get out of your way they can be more trouble.

If the sharks are freaking you out stay away from the vending machines.  They seem to have a higher kill rate than sharks.

Are Vending Machines Deadlier than Sharks?

Wednesday June 29, 2005
Are vending machines deadlier than sharks?Vending machines kill, sharks don't, according to a July 4, 2003 Reuters headline. The article quotes an L.A. lifeguard who asserts that in spite of the ubiquitous fear of shark attacks in this country, 'more people are killed in the United States each year by vending machines,' which smacks of an urban legend but probably isn't.

I say "probably isn't" because statistics relating to vending machine deaths aren't as easy to come by as data on shark attack fatalities, so it's difficult to draw a direct comparison. But if we look at 1995, for example — the most recent year for which I was able to find an accounting of deaths due to vending machine tipovers — two people died as a result of being crushed by falling soda machines in the U.S., as compared to zero shark-related deaths in the same twelve-month period.

Moreover, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission there were 37 known vending machine fatalities between 1978 and 1995, for an average of 2.18 deaths per year. Over the past decade there were a total of six recorded shark attack fatalities in the U.S., for an average of .6 deaths per year. Ergo, barring a drastic reduction in the frequency of vending machine accidents since 1995, vending machines are indeed more deadly than sharks by a factor of almost four. Discuss.
