Subject: How would you deal with this-Aggressiive Dogs & Owner on Run Route?
I wanted to know how everyone else would deal with a situation like this?
First, A little background on the subject....
I have been running the same route in my neighborhood since January, training for triathlons and marathons. My "neighborhood" is a very rural area in the country where houses are spread apart, and usually sit on many acres of land. This particular situation, The Aggressive dog owner has more than 100 acres, that has been in their family for a long time, Where several members have built homes on it,So it seems as if they own the entire 2 mile stretch of that road.

The problem. The dogs at this house would chase me and nip at me, Very aggressivly. The owner stoped me one day and told me the name of the most aggressive dog, Told me if I call him by name,Maybe ,MAYBE,He wouldn't bite me. Well, Day after day, I run, The dog nips, and I call him by name to tell him to stop. The dog seems to get more aggressive when I call his name.

I have been bitten in the past out here by other dogs while running.
I finally called the dog catcher and explained what was going on. He told me I should go and file charges on the owener.I didn't,However, The sherrif was sent out here,Took my statement and said I was in the right,He went to the owner and told them to restrain the dogs, or he would haul yhem off.

Ok, Dogs are no more a problem.
However, NOW it is the owner!
There was an accident involving a sherriff deputy in the dog owners yard,as I was running by and saw it, I stopped to see if I could be of assisttance. The dog owner began yelling at me, In front of the deputy, Telling me he was going to kick my BLEEP BLEEP! Using horrible language. He was jumping at me,and threatning me,and another man was "holding him back",Then he began yelling he was going to run me over with his car and kill me and be waiting for me at 5:30 am the next day(The time I normally run past there). I asked the deputy "did you hear that" He responded I don't want to hear all that arguing!!! I couldn;t believe it. This man is threatning to kill me, because he could not keep his dogs restrained, and the deputy tells me to leave, and dont come back around.

I forgot to mention before I called about the dogs, The owner would purposfully let them out on me, He has a doggy door that lets out into a fenced yard, But he would open the front door and turn them out on me.
I never done anything to the people,Before calling about his dogs. I wave at everyone, I never act like I own the road,I give the right of way to everyone.I try to be curteous always.
I am in no way afraid of this guy,But my wife insists I change my route to not aggravate the situation,What would you do?

I think you should find another route.  After some careful thought, I think you'll agree that avoiding a conflict is the smartest thing to do.  It might feel good to stand your ground, but it's not going to feel good laying under the tires of a psycho's car.  If you don't change your route, there is a good chance that one of you is either going to be hurt or go to jail.

You need to make an appointment with the Sergeant of Sherif's office and;

1.  Explain the background
2.  Report the deputy for some correction
3.  File any papers/charges that you can on this man.
4.  Carry pepper spray.

F.Y.I.  I'm the last one who would want to complain about an officers performance.  It's damn tough job.  I personally know many officers.  If an officer witness something like this and says quit arguing, he needs some correction from his superior.

I agree, I change my route if I know there are particular tight spots where I will encounter cars.  I would do the same with a house with dogs.  No need to bring those negative thoughts or experiences into what ought to be a relaxing run or bike.  As for the dog owner, sounds like you might have more luck arguing with the dogs as arguing with the owner.  Just be careful, some people are idiots.

Unless you are prepared for the situation to escalate, I have to agree that finding another running route may be the better part of valor.  You might wish to report the threatening incident in writing to police chief, or even local (county?) prosecutor.  Doing so might prevent the same thing happening to others in the future.
And using pepper spray on the dog may only further inflame the owner (and perhaps his family).

You are 100% in the right.  I agree with the other posters.  You need to decide how to handle the dog.  For me on one of the route that I bike often to a mountain park there is a purplish dog who loves to chase cyclists.  Especially up a slight incline.  I have been able to yell NO--GO HOME in my loudest, deepest voice.   He backs right off.  I don't know what I would do if it escalates.

Regarding the crazy guy.  You can't argue and with a crazy person.  Nope--it just doesn't work.  You don't want to escalate this.  Let him be someone else's problem....  If you decide to do anything get a restraining order for the him.

Regarding the cop--don't confront directly.  I think we have seen how that has worked in Boston.    They have to make decisions constantly regarding conflict.  I would handle with the officer's superior if you know the officer's name/badge number.  My son is in law enforcement==so I'm certainly not anti police. They have a tough job.

Good luck

I had a run-in with a belligerent dog owner a while back.  I just run somewhere else now.  I decided it wasn't worth it.  If I want to run with my kids, we drive to a nearby park instead of going to their school where I had the run-in with the jerk.  It sucks, but that's life.  There are some real big a-holes in this world, but any possible outcome from a violent confrontation has a negative side to it.  I want to do this sport for the positive things.

However, you choose... consider carrying both of the following in the meantime.
1. A cell video cam or handycam. Get his tirades on camera with a datestamp.
2. One of those bear repellants the size of a small fire extinquishers.

If you choose to ignore this problem and change routes you just leave the next runner or cyclist who comes along to be a victim of the same a-hole.  You need to call the sheriff and explain that one of his/her officers is a knucklehead who willfully ignore a violent threat made in his presence.

Next time you run by and the dog chases you, throw him a hot dog laced with a little antifreeze.....presto no dog on your run next time.  Of course I am joking.
