Subject: Ugly stroke=dang fast?!

Let me preface this by saying that I'm a recent TI convert. I'm not a whole lot faster than I was (3-5 secs per 100), but I take a lot less energy to get down the pool than I used to and have been told randomly by a swim coach that I have a "beautiful stroke". I like to think I'd make Terry proud.

So I'm swimming 100 repeats pretty hard this morning, when this guy in the next lane zooms past me. I didn't pay much attention except to think "Damn, he's fast!" Then while I'm resting between repeats, I see him swimming and it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Most notably, his hands slapped audibly on each entry. Sometimes, they'd hit just right and it would sound like he was clapping loudly. He had decent rotation, but pulled his entire back out of the water just before each stroke. His arms were more or less straight the entire time out of the water. It looked awkard and painful, but he was fast. I was pretty much done with my workout so I timed him, and sure enough, on 300 repeats, the guy is cranking out 1:15 to 1:20 per 100 METERS!!! He's smoking every one else in the pool. Even the guy I'd previously thought to be 'the fast guy'. I caught the old 'fast guy' staring at him swimming, too, so I remarked to him about it. He just stood there flabbergasted, saying "yeah, but he's fast....."

So what the heck?! What do you guys think? Is it really only about what you're doing under the water? Or is he just a mighty exception to a fairly solid rule? If it is only about what you're doing under the water, why does almost every swim coach focus so much on high elbows, smooth entry, etc? If what you're doing above the water counts, how fast would this guy be if he didn't look like such crap in the water?!?!?! My mind is just blown by this guy....

Just curious, did you get his stroke count?

On a side note, even if he looks awkward, I guess no one says anything because he'll just leave you in the dust

It IS really about what you're doing under the water.  My tri club watched a video about stroke technique a few weeks ago that showed the strokes of 4 different olympic swimmers - 3 sprinters and one long distance guy.  Some had prettier strokes than others, but what they all had in common was a strong underwater pull phase of their stroke, from the initial catch to the exit of the arm at the back of the stroke.  Technically speaking, the recovery part of the stroke (above the water) is the least important from a speed standpoint since this isn't where you encounter resistance.  Slapping the water on entry is probably not efficient, but if the underwater pull is really strong it doesn't make a huge difference.  A lot of the fast girls I swam with in high school also swam like you described - straight arm recovery and looking like they were almost lifting their back out of the water.  This isn't necessarily the most efficient way to swim, but it can be fast.  TI, on the other hand, is about efficiency, so it teaches a smoother stroke.

It's all about the pull and body position.

I think that if he had a decent stroke he would probably be clocking :54-58 per 100. Fast swimmers swim sub :60.

The question I would have would be what's his motivation for swimming -- distance or speed? The pool I swim at has a teenaged speed demon who propels himself at ridiculous rates...he leaves a wake like a jetski he's kicking so hard and his kicks actually propel him mightily fast....I don't know how fast but faster than anybody I've ever seen in real life.
And he hangs on the side and pants for a crazy long time after just 100yds, and stares at me like I'm nuts while I do 1500yds continuous. I'm slow (way, way slow), but I can swim a LOT longer than him. I'll never catch him, but going like that he'll never swim a mile, either. So maybe your ugly stroking friend is going for raw speed and his ugly stroke gets him that, because he doesn't care about efficiency for the long haul and you do? Not to say that fixing his stroke wouldn't get him both effiency _and_ speed....

Just conjecture, from someone who swims like a drowning slug.

When Janet Evans was competing in the 1988(?) Olympics, many people commented on her unorthodox stroke. Katie Couric interviewed her and asked "How would you describe your swimming style?" Janet replied "Rapid."

Kim,
I too, was getting lapped repeatedly this morn. I just kept thinking to myself, yeah but I'm jumping on the bike right after this. What about you Aqua Man?

Who knows? To each his own I guess. Funny thing about this tri training tho, you tend notice others' form in all diciplines.

Well, Madeye, that occurred to me, but after paying a bit of attention, he was swimming 250 or 300 repeats with very little rest (:10 or so) and wasn't all that winded. I'd say he was training for distance.... LOL! Maybe I'll get slapped by him in a tri....
