Subject: Garmin in IM
This year I'm using my Garmin for the run in my IM. How is the best way to start it up?

Mine tends to take a long time to find satellites even when running in same location each time.

If you just start the time will it pick up satellites on the fly and just mess up distance until it finds them?

I will be BOP so I will most likely have help in T2 tent. I had thought of attaching it to my fuel belt so I can just go and deal with it as I'm moving. I've read in RR of athletes giving it to volunteers who find the signal for them while in T2.

Trying to work things out in my head....

Thanks for ideas as I'm sure you all have figured out the best way to handle it.

Word of warming. I have heard that Garmins are no longer allowed in IM events.

Curious where you heard that?

Anyone know if that is true for IM Canada?

There's nothing in the rules prohibiting the use of a Garmin.

Kathy, why not put the watch on in T1? If you're concerned about battery life, just wait until you're on the back side of the bike course to turn it on. This would give it plenty of time to find a satellite.

No they are allowing garmin's they were speaking of other things. There was a thread on that a few weeks ago.

To answer your ??

I take the gps off prior to the start of the race to save battery

I start it at T1 and have it setcup on only HR (That is what I prefer) Since it doesn't have to locate gps it is ready right away

Then I use the multisport hitting lap on the end of the bike and again as I run out of T2

I will switch screens to check my time and I use the mileage signs on the course since gps is off.

It's the audible pacing devices that are banned, not devices that display your current pace.  (Not that that stopped a couple people in my race last weekend from using them...beep...beep...beep...beep...beep...beep...kept waiting for the bomb to go off.)

...Anyhow, to respond to the OP's question:  I opted not to use my Garmin 205 on the bike for my IM (I don't use an HRM), but I did put it on in T1.  Wasn't confident that the battery would last through all of bike and run and wanted the pace display on the run.  So I just made a mental note of a landmark on the bike course to remind me when I wanted to power it up.  That was enough to remind me and when I got off the bike, it had long since enabled for the run.

In the couple races where I've used it for bike and run, I've used the Auto Multisport mode and turned it on before going to the swim start and left it in my bike helmet.  For HIM and Oly, I'm confident in the battery charge lasting from swim start through finish.

Yep, so make sure your Garmin isn't auto lapping with a beep. Are you simply using it for HR? Need it for pace? I would just turn it on in T2 and let it acquire the signal on the run, should get it within the first mile, likely be taking the first mile real easy anyway. Of course, if just for HR that won't be an issue

I've done both my IM's with my Garmin.  I turn it on in the morning to let it sink with the satellite then turn it off.(Don't know if that helps, it makes me feel better)  When I get into transition I turn it on and it is up and running before I leave T1 or for you Kathy T2.

This is exactly what I did. I cut it on with about 15 miles to go on the bike, started the timer leaving T2 no problem.

What you've heard is about pacing devices that emit an audible tone - like a metronome.  Garmin and other GPS devices are allowed.

Same here, they can take a long time to find the sat's if its been a while, since the sats move. So it will find them faster if its been on recently. I did this in Louisville last year, and it was locked in before I left T2 for my run.
