I realized today on my run that during the run certain smells make me nauseous, but only when running. The two things I can not stomach when running are the smell of food cooking (as in the bacon and pancakes at the golf course club house I run past, or the BBQ joint I sometimes run past) or the smell of grass being cut (along with the exhaust from the landscapers machines). Anyone else experience something similar? I don't think these smells would bother me when cycling, and they certainly don't bother me when not running..

I love the smell of breakfast cooking while on morning runs. I've done some urban races that go past restaurants that are gearing up for breakfast. Mmmmm.....

Nothing better than the smell of BACON, but I just can't smell it when running... If I knew how I would insert some crazy bacon picture here...

Here you go! Wink

BTW, I love the smell of food when I'm out running, it's the day old road kill that makes me what to vomit.  I'll keep the pix animated not to gross out people!

Not surprising. Exercise causes some senses, noticeably smell and taste to sharpen. That's one reason that the older formula Gatorade would taste like absolute $!@#$! if you drank it when not exercising, but would taste great after/during exercise.

Makes sense I suppose..  I just find it strange that its only certain smells that affect me.

I just KNEW someone would post a pic of bacon for me.  Laughing

I've definitely noticed this too. Smells I usually like, such as food cooking on the grill, really bother me when I'm running. Smoke from people buring stuff makes me nauseous, which I find odd because I love the smell of wood burning in the fireplace or by a camp fire!

A lot of things bother my stomach when running though, so I just attributed it to my very weak running stomach.

Sometimes when I run down one of the main roads, I pass the McDonald's - that smells gross at 5 pm on a hot summer day.

There are also some flowering trees or something on the multi-use trail that flower in late spring that smell fishy...it's gross. Really gross...

I've definitely noticed sharpened senses of smell and taste during (and immediately after) running. It seems like a primitive trait- early humans must have spent a good deal of time running, and would have needed to rely upon an acute sense of smell for hunting, and an acute sense of taste to determine edible from toxic, etc.

I ran past a water treatment plant last night. I'd take the smell of breakfast or barbeque over that smell any day.

I can't stand getting a wiff of cigarette smoke when I'm out running - if I see some in my path smoking I'll hold my breath as I pass by.  I love the smell of cut grass or bbq though . . .

I did tri in Indianapolis this past weekend.  Part of the run went right behind the zoo walls, and I thought I was gonna throw up from the smell.

Haven't had too much trouble with smells on the run but the diesel fuel from boats during an OWS makes me really pukey.

Hello

Truck Diesel exhaust fumes-  One whiff and headache.  Running, walking, riding in a car anytime.

Now if the diesel fuel is burned in a turbine engine-  Smells like victory!

I usually work so hard that snot runs out of my nose constantly- swim, bike, run, it does not matter.  I never notice ANY smells running, or swimming, but when I bike, I smell EVERYTHING!  Strong Flowers, BBQ, Cig. smoke from passing cars, you name it.  I also try to ride past a local Waste Management site 2 times a week (it is at the top of a 5 mile hill).  When it's hot out like it has been, it's enough to make me puke!  About the only thing I can't smell is my own BO... my wife is sure to remind me when I get home though.

I am bothered by the roadkill (I hold my breath) and the diesel fumes of trucks.

the only time it bothered me is when the Redondo Beach Tri put us next to a Chinese Seafood Kiosk on a Sunday morning with all of last night's garbage in the dumpster... Holy rotting crabshells!

My wife tends to have a heightened sense of smell and notices when I run ..... especially if I hang the workout clothes in the bathroom.

I did Tri Indy too and I couldn't decide whether I was running behind the elephant wall or if it was the White River that smelled.  Didn't notice it as much on the second loop though.

Large bread making plants when they are at the raising of the dough process.  Always has bugged me.  Thankfully I know longer have to run by it.  Now, during the actual baking process...
