Pre-race routine:

We stayed at my brother's place about 40 minutes away. Woke up around 5, had some oatmeal and coffee and headed to Baxter.
Event warmup:

A quick bike and swim.
Swim
  • 13m 42s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

While my time was ok for me, it was a rough swim. My goggles would not seal and as a result I was basically swimming blind. On the backstretch I ran into slower swimmers from wave 1 and had a hard time finding a clean lane because I couldn't see anything.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the goggles are sealed and ready to go before hand...
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

no issues, a pretty standard T1 for me.
Bike
  • 45m 51s
  • 17.3 miles
  • 22.64 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed the bike about as hard as I could. HR was in upper z4/z5 pretty much the entire ride. The rumble strips on 77(?) made it really tough to pass. Your only option was moving out onto the road.

There were other stretches of road that were really rough also but such is life.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

wasted a little time here because I went down the wrong row.
Run
  • 30m 26s
  • 3.9 miles
  • 07m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt ok the first mile, really struggled the middle 2 miles but felt better the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

For me, this is a decent run. I need to put more miles in this winter...
Post race
Warm down:

grabbed a couple waters and a hot dog and waited for my wife and friends to finish. Also ran into an old co-worker from like 10 years ago so that was fun.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My run stinks.

Event comments:

I think this race is just a really nice no frills race. Not a lot of extras but they just do a nice job. The bike course is rough but the RD doesn't have a lot of options given the location of the swim. Hopefully the county will get around to repaving some of the roads.

Good race!  This was my 1st time at Baxter.  Totally agree with the nice rice, no frills comment.  I didn't the roads were that bad.  I was wave 4 and passing a lot people on the bike so I just stayed out on the road.  Great bike split!

Awesome bike split! I found it interesting that the RD mentioned during the pre-race brief that there would not be any officials on the bike course so as to keep the cost down. Personally, I didn't see any drafting at all. At other races (square lake, chisago, to name a few) drafting/packs were more obvious IMHO.

Nice race with a great bike split.

I did see a drafter right at the end of my bike leg.  I guy passed my and then another like 1 length behind who then pulled in right behind the lead guy...pissed me off!  I hollered after them "nice drafting!"  I wondered if they had been trading off.
