Ive done it the last two years in a row, first year as a fundraiser, last year as the 5K race.  You swim from Nyack to Tarrytown so you swim across the river.  There is current and tide in the hudson, canbe very tough.  First year I did it in just under 2 hours, last year the boats pulled over half the swimmers out due to rough conditions and added close to 45 more minutes to my time.

It's a good event (I'm biased becuase I'm on the committee).  Due to extended sickness this year, I won't be crossing, I may just do the 1-mile race.

Do it, nothing like being in the middle if the hudson.

The water's fine. Seriously. I've done two swims in the river-NYC Tri in '08 and the Hudson River Swim this past Spring and they were great.
