Subject: 4 months on the trainer... gimme some workouts....
I am signed up for Cali 70.3, but currently on blood thinners, to come off Jan1.  My wife really doesn't want me riding outside while on them, so I have committed (or,I shouldbe committed) to the trainer until Jan1, when I get outside (yippee!).  I've got a few workouts, but i need some more.......  Right now it's in the garage so it's not like I can sit and watch the boob tube while I ride....

Not sure how long I can go.  Most I've ever done is 1:30, I think.  I hear about 3 hour trainer rides and everything goesall numb just thinking about it

Workouts?

I do alot of my bike training on e-motion rollers in the garage.  Bought a cheap portable DVD player that I watch during rides.  Have a few Spinervals videos and they are ok for some variety.  Get a good fan too!

Use Jorge's winter workouts that he put up on BT for last winter.  Here's the thread:

And here is is page with the workouts for 16 weeks:

That should get you all ready to get  back on the road come January with some decent cycling base.  Do an occasional longer ride and you should have no troubles getting ready.  I'll be using his workouts once again this winter which works out well when your stuck inside and can't ride the roads for 4-5 months due to winter.

Good luck.

Listen to music with a lot of tempo and dynamic changes and ride to the music. Symphonies, concertos, progressive rock, movie soundtracks etc..

Chris,

What type of trainer do you have? If a Computrainer, you can ride all the Ironman courses (full and almost all the 70.3 I believe) OR ride the 2008 Tour de France (I have the files if they're still not online)

And if you don't want to go with the Computrainer - consider the Tacx I-Magic or Fortius.  Their newest software allows you to bring in GPS tracks and then ride it within Google Earth, not to mention all the great Real Life Videos they offer, plus Catalyst mode that lets you setup specific workouts (used this for Jorge's winter cycling last year).

some good advice here.  something else you might try is spin class at your gym.  I was unable to ride for about a 3-month period.  I enjoyed the cycle classes for several reasons; 1) didn't get my bike all gunked with sweat, 2) usually some nice objects to look at in class, 3) the 60-minutes goes by pretty quickly.  Sometimes I would get there 30 - 45 minutes early if I wanted to do a longer ride.  even now that I am healthy I'll be back in the winter when it's too cold and icy to ride outside.

Just ride to "Flight of the Bumblebee" over and over.

cheap tv, cheap dvd player. On days when you are not doing anything but putting time in and don't have to concentrate on what you are doing....get a season of 24...It passes time better than anything else on those longer, slower, rides.

i believe newleaf had or has a video profile that shows the proper way to get a good trainer workout.

All great advice, thanks everyone.   Wish i could get a CT for cheap, but right now finances are directed elsewhere...

The real bummer is I live in So Cal so "winter" is really just a theory that no one's proven yet.  Riding on a sunny December morning is fantastic.....
