5stones - 2009-09-10 1:30 PM I am not reading something correctly on the race details & course map. The race details indicate the buoys are on your right when swimming but the map looks the opposite. Did they change the direction of the swim?

the tides have changed since the map was posted.  the tide will be coming in in the morning - they are swimming us the easy way.

It's my understanding that the start is near the 4H dock, which is north of the swim exit.  The long course will just go farther out from the shore than the short course.  The exit is just north of the ferry, near the picnic area.  Not sure if the run to T1 will be on the road or around the back of the grass parking area, but it will be a pretty good ways.

Me and meh ran into the guys from Endorphin Fitness a few weeks ago, while they were doing a clinic on the course, and they seemed to confirm all of this.  On another trip, it had rained the night before and the water was up at least a foot from the week before.  We have been getting a good deal of rain lately, though I think it is forecasted for clear on race day.  We both also received a couple small cuts on our feet from the oyster shells.  No biggie though.

Do people know if they'll allow us to put shoes, flip-flops, etc., near the swim exit?  From this injury I had a ways back, I don't do well at all barefoot.  Flip-flops, shoes, are fine, but not barefoot.

When I did the lady partiot 2 years ago I had dropped and old pair of flip flops at the exit and put them on when I got out.  Seemed to work for me.

Optional, yes.  You might be able to find one to rent but you're right that short notice would make it harder...

So....where might one go about getting a wetsuit in the Hampton Roads Area?  I was kind of hoping that the water temp and air temp would be warm enough.  This morning it was chilly and i think that a wetsuit will help me get into the water early sunday morning!  I'm anxiously awaiting my first tri on Sunday  :/

Check whatever tri stores are in the area.  A lot of tri shops have them available to rent.  You may also be able to get one through a dive shop, but they aren't designed with swimmer's shoulder movements in mind.

I don't know of anything local in Hampton Roads that rents wetsuits.  You will either have to go to Richmond (3Sports) or the tri shop in Virginia Beach and buy one...$200-$500.  Cheaper online, but not faster.

Even if it is 74 degrees in the water, your body will warm up 100 yards in...getting out into the colder air (less than 74 degrees) is going to be the trick as your body dries off.  Bring arm warmers for the ride...you'll likely take them off within 10 minutes.

Wish me luck tomorrow during the Half.  Maybe I'll see some of you the next day if I have time to volunteer, but I will definitely watch...it would be a complete waste if I didn't drive the 3 miles to watch.

Good luck on your Half saturday... I guess I am just really nervous about the swim I have played around plenty of times in water at or below 74 .. but i never knew the actuall temp... that number just sounds cold. This being my first tri I just want to finish, I am already addicted and looking forward to the start of next season and doing the patriot half next year... I will have a wetsuit by thenSmile

I wouldn't worry too much about it.  You'll be so pumped up, as soon as your wave starts you won't notice a thing - except for the other racers knocking you around.  Stay to the outside, that's where I'll be.  Start taking cold showers, work on your swim stroke under the stream then go run around the backyard to air dry.

actually no, I'm glad it's 74.  If it goes down more, all the better, less tugging on the neck.

I love my wetsuit.

You'll be fine on the swim.  74 isn't cold, and once you start swimming, get the HR up, etc., you won't even notice anything.  My only advice is if you feel cold at first, make sure to focus on your breathing.  deep inhales and exhales.  good luck!!

gels make me want to vomit.  just thinking about them is icky.  i've been experimenting with drinks unsuccessfully.  might just chow down a clif bar in transitions.  (half before and half after bike)  i'm nervous about running a 10k on an empty tummy.

Can you do gummy bears or something like that?  Might be easier to eat and you don't have to worry about eating in transition.

Looking forward to the race this weekend. See everyone there, figuratively speaking I would imagine.

I do have a couple of extra wetsuits if someone is interested. I have a sleeveless Ironman which someone is welcome to borrow for the day if you would like. I also have a brand new Blue70 Reaction, size M, which I will sell to someone for $200 if they are interested. Sorry, I can't let you borrow the Blue70 as it has not even been removed from the packaging yet. If someone has an interest in either shoot me a PM.

Gu makes a gummy version of their gel... kinda slimey though.  What about candy corn?  I read somewhere that it can be just a good as a gel and you said you wanted something with sugar.

I swam today at about 1pm...the water was super choppy and cold.  Didn't notice the cold after 100 yards, but the choppiness was still there.  At about 3pm the chop had died down a lot, but at 7am I suspect it will be cool.

I think the air temp being below the water temp is going to help with the shock somewhat. As for the chop i think it will  be pretty flat only a slight breez during the day today and that will lay down by midnight as the air gets cooler than the water . this morning the bay is smooth as glass hopefully the river will be too. It also looks like we will be swimming with a slack tide (no current to speak off. Good luck to all and I hope we all surpass our personal goals

I totally crashed during the race. Literally. Mile 17 on the bike. If you did the half and passed someone lying on the ground or had an ambulance pass you on the bike, that was me. Thirteen stitches (three in my left elbow, 10 in my left knee), a knee brace, and crutches later, I am heartbroken I couldn't finish my first Half. That hurts more than the injuries. The bike is okay, but
I haven't seen it myself.

Had a pretty good swim, though, and I was rocking the bike until I went down.

Hope everyone had a good race!
