Interesting article.

When I was volunteering at IMLP this year, I saw tons of people popping ibuprophen in transition--people had them along with vitamins and GU gels in their race bags. Initially I thought, wow, what a great idea! Totally doing that next year, too!

It never occurred to me to use ibuprophen during a race, though I have used it for pain management when I was injured (would pop one before a tough workout so I could get through it without too much discomfort).

WOW. Unless I missed something, I can't believe they published this article without also including the fairly extensive findings that the use of NSAID's during endurance events can pose a huge risk to kidney function.

Any BT doctors care to chime in?

Yeah, blink and you miss the one sentence about it (but ew, what a sentence):

"The ibuprofen users also showed signs of mild kidney impairment and, both before and after the race, of low-level endotoxemia, a condition in which bacteria leak from the colon into the bloodstream."

Terrible idea for more than one reason. I've posted a lot on this in the past.

Is that why during The Distance Tammy gets her knees shot up, after she mentions not being able to take the pills during the race?

Runners World had a good article about taking pills during and after a race.

I know that at the Marine Corps Marathon last year, they were only giving out Tylenol, no Ibuprofen. My wife (a former Marine) was quite surprised.

Yes. She said that the Ironman Athlete Guide she received advised taking against NSAID's during the race.

I'm doing IMMOO this year and made a point of looking for that info in the guide, but I honestly have not seen it.
