Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 04:00 AM. Ate a powerbar and a banana. Drank a Diet Mtn. Dew and sipped on G'ade as I drove down to Kiawah Island.
Event warmup:

20 min spin on the bike and quick swim in the ocean.
Swim
  • 26m 56s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

The ocean was kind of rough and I was nervous about swimming through the surf. I took the first part of the course easy so I wouldn't freak out. Around the mid point I started feeling more at ease and started swimming harder. I got out of the water @ 00:24:35. My swim time included a 1/4 mile run from the ocean to the transition through thick beach sand.
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Decent transition.

Comments:

Nothing special, ran in with the bike, put my shoes on, and started running.
Run
  • 52m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started running through thick beach sand back down towards the ocean. Once we reached the beach we started running down the beach. It was high tide! We were running through surf and mud. I spent way more energy on that first mile than I had anticipated. My shoes were full of ocean water and beach sand. I got a blister on both feet and my left heal. To be hones I just kind of put things on cruise control and ran to the finish. I probably should have pushed a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

A guy tried to beat me at the line so I sprinted the last 100 yards or so. Once I crossed the line a girl wanted my chip. I thought she was going to take it, but it was obvious she wanted me take it off. I bent down to take it off. When I stood back up I came about as close as I have ever come to passing out. A big guy in a red shirt caught me before I hit the ground. He led me over to a tent and put an ice pack on my neck. I was tired but I think standing up too fast was the cause of the near syncopal episode. I sat with the ice on my neck and head for about 5 minutes and felt fine afterwards.

Event comments:

Having to run the first mile of the run at high tide kind of sucked, but everyone had to deal with it so it's all good. It was the first time I've done this race and I will probably come back next year.

Nice race.  That swim time is nice.  Looks like you've improved the swim a lot.  Well done.

Great job!

My family has vacationed at Kiawah a few times.  At high tide, I know from personal experience that sand is ridiculously tough to run in.  You pretty much have to be in the water to get solid footing.  And a 24-25 minute ocean swim?  Thats getting it done.

Nice!

Thanks, BUT it helps when you have an incoming tide and waves to push you along!

Nice race! I had contemplated doing it, but chickened out because of the ocean swim. Glad to hear that it went well for you!
