Pre-race routine:

At beginning of the week was uncertain how I was going to approach this race. In the past I have just used as an excuse to run with my friends, but never focusing on any kind of goal. Well after a pretty good season of running, I kind of wanted to try and PR. However, with nursing some sore ribs (from my fall in the woods last week) I wasn't sure I could pull off a PR. As fate would have it, lrunfit (Lisa) was looking for someone to pace as she wasn't looking to race all-out. Perfect. Last year my time was 1:21. Wanted to beat that and had ideal goal of 1:17.

Arrived on scene costumeless. I figured with my ribs, any extra weight would not be a good idea. Met up with the Donks and admired all the costume creativity. Tried to stay warm, as it was pretty chilly with a stiff wind.
Event warmup:

Huddled in the building to try and stay warm
  • 1h 17m 12s
  • 9.35 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile

Started out running with Lisa, Morey1 (Dan) with Royal Flush (Clint) bringing up the rear. The first thing you notice about Lisa is her amazing form. Get your head out of the gutter people, I'm talking about her running form. It is like she is floating. Very impressive. The next thing you notice is that if she is on a mission, you better get out of her way. Well we started too far back and really got clogged up behind lots people (where is Royal flush when you need him?) With Lisa and Dan leading the way we were able to push past lots of folks through the first mile. First mile had us about 9, so we need to make up a little time in mile two. Pushed it up to mid-7's for mile two (uh-oh). As we headed up the first hill, Dan moved ahead. Miles 3 through 6 really flew by. Lisa did a great job of keeping me on pace, yet keeping me entertained so I didn't focus on effort I was making. As we got mile seven, she told me the plan was to ease up just a bit and then hit it hard for last few miles. Some how I felt like I wasn't being told how it could be done, but that this is how it WOULD be done. Only problem is that miles 8 and 9 you have a nice stiff wind blowing in your face. I felt myself begin to fade a bit. However, my pacer would have none of it. She really cracked the whip (in a nice way) and told me that it was time to push it. So I did. Usually at this point in a race all I hear are the voices in my head. It was nice this time to have firm words of encouragement from someone else as I pushed to the finish. Crossed the line at 1:17:03 (although official time has it at 1:17:12) Mission accomplished!
What would you do differently?:

have lrunfit pace me at all my races.
Post race
Warm down:

Thanked Lisa, caught my breath, cheered in a few more Donkeys, froze off my azz as I cooled down and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Oh lots of things, but this was the best result I could have gotten with where I am right now.

Event comments:

Could use better timing chips, as I think official time is about 20 seconds off of actual race time. Still very pleased with this. If you ever have an opportunity to get paced by an amazing athlete who really knows how to motivate I suggest you do it.

Weren't you a little worried about getting jostled or poked in the beginning, regarding your ribs?

Nice job, Jim, and what a great ending for the season!

As I said in my report, you got game my man.  Great job.  Someday I hope to run without actually hitting the ground like Lisa does.
