Subject: Chicago Olympic Size Pools
Any one know of any Olympic Size pools in Chicago that I can use?  YMCA or Park District?  The joy of swimming in an Olympic pool is worth at least $10 - $15 per visit for me.

Thanks.

Not sure about the YMCA or Park District.  I know that UIC has several pools and one of them is 50m.  I also believe that Moody Bible Institute has a 50m pool.  Both Chicago Masters and Chicago Blue Dolphins do their swims at both places.

I researched some last night, for my own benefit, and the only Olympic I could find in the area with any public access was UIC at 901 Roosevelt, but you had to be a member of Wellfit, or Blue Dolphins, or similar org first.

Thanks for the responses - I'm going to try and figure this out; I will post if I find anything worth while.

The Blue Dolphins has a relatively cheap membership rate.  There's roughly 8 or 9 practices a week and for a $140 you can get unlimited practices for about 2 months.

How crowded is the pool for the hours UIC is open swim or for the practices? With the holidays coming, I'm worried about an already crowded pool becoming unbearable at my gym.

I can't say about open swims at UIC but the Chicago Blue Dolphins have between 10-20 in the pool during any one of their practices.

If you are an alumnus of UIC or UIUC I believe you can get a membership to the UIC physical fitness center, including access to the pool.  It's actually not a bad deal - about $35/month ($430/annual fee).

Moody doesn't have an olympic pool- it's only 25 meters.  Their annual membership is a reasonable $300/year, which includes access to the entire workout center.  But if you're just using the 25m pool, you can use any ol' Chicago Park District pool for a lot less (some are even free).

If your Olympic needs can wait until summer, Portage Park has an outdoor olympic pool.

Good luck.

If you live in the suburbs and can wait till the summer the Wilmette Park District has a 50M pool at Centenial Aquatics Park

There is an Olympic indoor pool in Arlignton Hts. near Arlington Heights Rd. and Euclid Rd.  It allows residents and non-residents though non-residents have to pay a few dollars more.

You are in the city? The CPD's Holstein Pool in Bucktown is 50 meters. Lap swimming is usually first thing or last after the pool open/closes each day. A summer pass is $40 - since we only have a month pass I don't know what they will charge you for the last month. It's outdoors, so it's only for the summertime.

I have been looking for an Olympic pool for a long time in the Chicago area. I tried calling the pool in Arlington Heights that a previous response mentioned, but it is NOT an olympic size pool: it is 25 yards. The "Olympic" name is just from the name of the area/park.

It does seem that there is an Olympic size pool in the south Chicago area at a Holiday Inn. I have yet to check it out, but the photos look pretty believable.

Rehm Pool (outdoor) in Oak Park is 50m, as is Ridgeland Commons in Oak Park...however Ridgeland Commons will be closed for the 2013 pool season due to renovations.  Rehm has designated lap swim sessions (call or get schedule online) daily.  You can pay by the session ($4) or get a lap pool pass for the season (about $90 for an out-of-district resident).

Get a lap swim pass through the Chicago Park District. Depends on where you live, you can use one of the many indoor pools.

Is this place packed for lap swim?  This location would be perfect for me.

There is an olympic distance, 50m pool at Portage Park.  The pool facility there was built and used for the Pan Am games in the 70's.

They have certain "lap swim" times throughout the day, and the best times to visit are the early morning swims.  There are three designated lap lanes and the rest is open pool mainly filled with experienced aged floaters.

I swim there occasionally through the summer, but prefer the less crowded 25y pools or OWS at Ohio St. beach.

Here is the 2013 schedule for Rehm Pool.  I honestly cannot say how crowded it is, because I did all of my lap swimming at Ridgeland Commons.  But I suspect with Ridgeland being closed for the season, many of those lap swimmers from Ridgeland will undoubtedly end up swimming laps at Rehm this year.

Then again, our family had passes last summer and mostly used Rehm, but we're skipping it altogether this summer due to the one-pool situation. We belong to Loyola Fitness and can swim there without hardly ever sharing a lane in the 25m pool. May take the kids for a couple swim sessions, but nowhere near the number of times we went last year or the year before.

I hate to hear that Ridgeland will be closed this summer!  What a bummer!

I called up UIC Rec Center and they said 50yrd pool was only for their team and special events. I think one of the Chicago based clubs is allowed to use that pool (but they charge good money for membership). The other pool open to public, alumni etc is 25yrd lane.

There is an 50m size outdoor pool in Arlington Heights at Recreation Park (except I think they only set up their configurations of 50 meters early on Sunday mornings). The Schaumburg Park District also has an outdoor Olympic pool (Meineke Pool)I did a sprint Tri at but I'm not sure how they set up their lane configurations most times. Woodland Trails pool in Prospect Heights is also an outdoor Olympic size pool.

Check our Recreation Pool in Arlington Heights. It's a park district pool so you can pay a nominal daily fee. The 50 M length open swim is on Sunday morningsfrom 9:30 - 11:30. It will be crowded but never overly crowded. Happy swimming!
