Subject: Unbelievable
Really don't know what to say about what I saw tonight.

Was driving in some local road, and saw a kid in the SUV in front climbing all over the place.  All of a sudden he poked his head out, and threw some trash paper toward the on-coming traffic.  His little body was outside of the car,  stretching long and far, trying to TOUCH the other cars nearby!  The SUV kept on driving for close to half a mile with the kid dangling from the window around his torso.  It was dark so I turned on the high beam to make sure other people see this crazy kid sticking his head and arm outside, trying to touch other cars.
Finally we reached a stop light. I pulled up beside the SUV and saw the woman driver (the mother?) TEXTING.  She didn't even know I was trying to talk to her until the kid told her.  She rolled down the window looking surprised.  I yelled at her, told her to be careful and she'd better control the kid.  Guess what she said?  "what do you want me to do?"
Unbelievable!  I so wish a cop was around.

If the mother is texting while driving and unaware the kid is hanging out the window (and not seatbelted) that about sums up her concerns about parenting. She doesn't. And guess where she learned it from? Probably her parents, so guess what the kid will do with their kids?

Unbelievable!  I so wish a cop was around.

Duct tape.

Don't laugh.  I had a friend who adopted a 5 year old from Kazakhstan.   A sweet little boy, but high energy.   Kept  undoing the car seat straps.

"Do the straps tighter" I said.

No dice.

"Here, borrow our Britax Marathon, it's hard to undo the latches"

No Dice.

"Duct tape the straps."

No Dice.

Zip ties.  ZIP TIES, are the only thing that would keep him in his seat.   So, for about a month she kept a pile of zip ties and some cutting pliers in her car.

I also had to remove the window cranks from the back doors of her car.   Before the zip ties, he got out of his seat and rolled the window down, and was hanging out the window, ON THE INTERSTATE, before she could get the car pulled over.   He was hanging far enough out that it was easy to remove him through the window.

She told us this story when she was over at our house.   I told her that those cranks were removable.  Her eyes LIT UP.   "Could you do that?"   sure.   I wish I had a camera to record his face when he realized those cranks were gone.  She said it was priceless.  He's my God-Son, so someday I'll tell him that it was me who removed the cranks.  For now, he'll just have to think it was her!

not sure on the laws in Mass, but one option would be to call the police on her - giving the cops her license plate.

I would have yelled, "Get the FUCH off the phone, pay attention, get your kid settled in like he's supposed to, and properly drive?", all in a stern and sarcastic voice.  Oh, then add "DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" at the end.

I really think the police should focus less on speeders and more on enforcing safety on the roads.  I was behind this person the other night doing 40 in a 55 with a line of traffic behind them/me and the cop we drove by clocking speeds didn't move.  I bet if they were doing 70 he would've have hestiated on pulling them over.  When will the police realize that people going well below the speed limit, are as much if not more of a danger than someone speeding.  In most states 15 mph or below is consider impeding the flow of traffic.

Speaking of unbelievable (and not trying to hijack the thread but the title made me think of this again), I was watching the local news last night and a woman had walked across the street to make change at a bank (she worked at a convenience store across the street). As she was walking back across the street, she was hit by a drunk driver (hit and run, driver later captured). Several people, rather than stopping to come to her aid, stopped to grab the money that went flying from her hands when she was hit. Seriously?! Sometimes people just truly sadden me

I know my last post was a little off topic, but I see police bypass obvious safety issues all the time.  I'm not sure if the police would've pulled this lady over if they were behind them.   The police are just as bad with the texting/computer surfing in the car.  One guy almost hit me the other day when I was out on a bike ride, more concerned with the computer then the direction of his vehicle.  Don't get me wrong I think the police do a great job but when it comes to traffic stops/violations I think there priorities are out of whack.

To counteract that story, my mom told me about how she had gone to the bank, and got $200 in 20s. She had it in her purse, and when she was in the parking lot of a grocery store (Wegmans), the envelope of cash slipped out of her purse, the wind caught it, and her pile of 20s went flying through the air. It had just rained, so the money was sticking to the ground, all over the parking lot. She was on her hands and knees, scraping the money off of the asphalt, and people started scrambling around, grabbing money. 3 random strangers started scraping the 20s off the ground, and then gave it BACK to my mom. She recovered ALL $200!! Some people are really awesome, too

This story reminds me of how people "parent" by putting signs in their front yards telling people that they don't watch their kids and that the kids are probably playing in traffic, so don't speed or you will kill my slow children.

How about paying attention to what your little monsters are doing for once?

This isn't as serious as the kid hanging out of the window, but in the McDonald's drive thru this morning, the car behind me tagged me.  I got out and walked to the back to find the lady with her window down (paying) with a cigarette in one hand and a cell phone in the other.  Which hand was on the wheel?  I guess none.  Which hand was going to be used to eat breakfast? Got me?  I said,"Maybe you should hang up and drive!"  She said,"Oh, my husband (in the front seat) has a concussion and I am staying in contact with the hospital."  I repeated the "Hang up and drive" statement then got in my car and drove away.

I wonder if she realizes that she was at McDonald's rather than the hospital?  She literally needed 4 hands to do what she was doing....and probably 3 to 4 more brains to think about all 4 hands.

Definitely would have called the cops. A friend witnessed what was apparently a domestic assault (guy driving punched woman passenger a couple times) on Rte 2 in Belmont and called the cops with the description of the car and people. They were pulled over before they made it Memorial Drive.
