On vaca, and the Miami Int'l just happened to be going on...so I signed up...Wink

anyone done this race before?  seems there is a pretty nasty bridge we'll cross 4 times, other than that, I assume flat for the bike/run?

any other comments on the race?

looking forward to it!

there will be a number of peeps from BT that will do this race.  did it this year will be there next year.  its a good race, nice venue.  key biscayne has alot of triathlons thanks to the ocean, nice bike place and run all in one spot.

great race as it bring in some big names.  Potts & Reed will race in it.  Will be sold out.

the only negative part is the run its a 2 x 5k loop and part of the trail is dirt, so when you are one of the later folks the dust is up in the air it gets to be a pain.  the bridge is wicked but other then that its flat, but since this is in march it is pretty windy here, just an FYI.

if you are in town and can race it i would recommend it.

I'm in with a lot of my other club members.  Great race.  the Rickenbacker is a killr bridge especially sicne when heading west you turn right around and head back up..so no momentum to help.
I like the run since it is pretty well shaded.  bring bug spray, it was pretty buggy with moquitos last year.  I met Potts and Reed last year at the race.  It was awesome ot see them at such a small venue.
Depending on the wind, the swim can fairly fast, but at Miami Nice (same venue as MIT) the last 400 meters had wave slapping you in the face dead on...and the current was very much against you.

See you all there... I have always avoided the dreaded bridges, but too tempting to stay away. Also give me good reason to stay in shape this winter.

small venue?

how so?  it was sold out 1500 olympic distance only.  seems like a good size triathlon to me especially for Olympic distance?

2 questions:

1.  Will this be a wetsuit race and

2.  any thoughts on ocean swimming?  I'm from the Midwest and its been a few years since I swam in salt water?

For two years has been wetsuit legal...the water temps are aound 75oF by that time...

The swimming is in a closed area.....It's where the Miami Rowing Club train....nothing to worry....calm waters...Check here the link:

http://mitriathlon.com/race_info_theswim.html

But sometimes can be choppy if it's windy....but...not big deal...

The waters are not necessarily calm, but they are calmer than ocean swimming regardless.  I swam a mile here one month after MIT and 25 MPH winds still affected the current.

But yes, I'm in MIT this year too!  Looking forward to some redemption after not being able to run ING half ten days ago.

for those that did this last year or year before, talk about the winds...

course looks like 2 loops, and it appears you would have the wind at your back for 1/4 or race, headwind for 1/ of race and cross winds for 1/2 of the race....is this correct?

how did wind effect your your ride?  I expect winds to be 15-25 mph this time of year, unless we get lucky....

thanks!

I don't recall winds of 15-25 MPH last year.  Must have been the year before.  MiamiMan (in November, 2009) had 35 MPH gusts (damn hurricanes).

Yes, there are two loops and there will likely be some winds (though 15-25 MPH guaranteed seems a bit much).  What you want to hope for is winds coming off the mainland and not from the east.  This will impact the Rickenbacker bridge descents b/c if the winds are coming off the ocean, you'll have a nice tailwind going down the first and third climb, but then you have to come to a screeching halt and u-turn yourself back up.  If the winds are off the mainland, then you have much less impact on your legs.

sorry!!...me stating 15-25 was a complete guess, based on nothing other than my stupid head, so please no one read that and take it to mean anything!!!

I lived in FL for 3 years and was used to some pretty good winds this time of year.

good to hear we can expect winds under 15 mph...

thanks for the thoughts!

EDIT:  I've never done this race before!

Yes...the course is 2 loops...and...

About the winds...depends from where they are coming...They usually come from NE by this time...but....with all these cold fronts...now...they are coming from NW lately...not usual...and...we are having gusty winds lately too....in that range...15 to 25 mph....Yikes...!!!

That means...when you start the bike you go to the Rickenbcker Bridge first with headwinds/crosswinds....watch-out going down bridge...You will feel the crosswinds at that point....then after the brigde...maybe 200 or 300 mts... you will do the U-turn...and...head again to the bridge but with tailwinds and crosswinds....Yahooooooo...!!! till you get at Crandon Park where you will do the U-turn....and....a long way back with headwids/crosswinds again....then turn right to Virginia Key...headwinds...till the U-turn....tailwinds again....till you get in the main road...and...headwinds/cosswinds again heading to the bridge to start the 2nd lap....

You will need to check the Weather Channel..before the Race.....in that way you can have an idea of what you will have to deal...

I train every Sunday at Key Biscayne....and....the winds are coming from NW lately...but...it's not usual....weird weather.....in between 10 to 20 mph and sometimes more.....
