A friends is going to start training for her first try-a-tri and we were thinking of doing Milton on June 6th/10.  I'd cheer her on for her first race and then I'd do the sprint after.  On the weekend I was talking to a woman that did it last year and said the water was choppy and freezing!  I'm a total chicken when it comes to cold water so just curious - how cold is cold?  I'd also like friend's first race to be somewhat enjoyable... or at the very least - I'd like her to want to try another!  Anyone do this one before?

Milton is a wonderful race but the swim can be cold. I have done Milton 7 times with my first tri being the try-a-tri there and I love the course. Water temperatures in the low 60's are common, and the water is murky but not choppy. The low temperatures can be hard on beginners and the rescue boats are often busy pulling out try-a-triers having panick attacks. The try-a-tri is a little hilly but the sprint has a climb up the escarpment that is a killer, and then a fairly hilly run around Hilton Falls.

Thanks for the feedback!!

Hmmmm I'm thinking I may shift my schedule now... skip the Milton Sprint and turn Sydenham into a sprint.  How do you spell CHICKEN??

re: friend.  I'll speak to her about it - see if there's another close race that she'd rather do.  This will be her first so ya - I'd like her to have a positive experience.  She's an 'athena' - I posted a thread in that category but haven't had a response - does anyone know of a good place to purchase tri gear (ie shorts) and we'll need to look at a wetsuit for her.  I rent from endursports but not sure re: sizing options.  Definitely don't want to drag her to stores where there are no options available.  Anything in the "day trip" Southern Ontario / Buffalo area that people know of?

Thanks again!

I think it was air temperature that made Milton so horrible last year.  I remember going for a run that day and it being frigid.  I felt sorry for those racing.  I think it was around 10 without the wind.

I did it a few years ago and found the water temperature comfortable with a wetsuit on and the air temperature was HOT.  I think it is just a variable time of the year.

Yes, the swim is also at Kelso.  The swim for the women's race is probably fine for temperature, but the June 6th race is a little too early in the season.

Kimmax, I'd suggest having your friend wait a few weeks and do the try-a-tri at Guelph for her first race. The conditions should be a lot more pleasant.

I did my first sprint this year at Milton and I plan to do it again next year.  Water was cold, but compared to the heat of training in the pool with a wetsuit, it was pretty comfortable!

You would never imagine the difference in water temperature two weeks.
If you are looking for warm weather, try the one in London / St. Marie (Lake sunova). The water there is spring fed and very warm. When I raced, it was >80 deg F

Kimmax, As for races are concerned, you could try the Welland one in mid-June. Always warm if not the water. As for gear, I am an athena myself, 5'2'' and 155 pounds, bought most of my trisuits stuff at Neworld Runners in Burlington, found several sizes and styles that would fit me, and at the end of season as well. The prices were affordable. For wetsuit, took advantage of Exterra wetsuit sale which I think is still on and emailed them my measurements. They sent me one and it fits like a glove...Just my two cents...

The June Lakeside race has been moved to Woodstock and Lake Pittock (I live in woodstock, and all the locals are grossed out by Pittock).  Last year, I did Lakeside in June and the water was COLD.  People not wearing a wetsuit had horrible swims.

Bopper - 2009-12-15 3:58 PM

Swim can be cold... but this past year wasn't bad, because the water temperature was warmer then the air (felt better IN the water than out), it's definitely a wetsuit race though. After the swim, I had my cold weather cycling coat on for the bike... but by the time I was running I stripped that off. Two years ago, it was a beautiful day... warmish, but not unbearable. That early in the year it is hit and miss.

I agree with Bopper - I swim at Kelso on a regular basis and this time of year the water can be quite cold, but last year I didn't want to get out of the water because it felt so warm.  I rode with a vest last year, and got ride of that by the start of the run.

Guelph is a great option and I've found that the couple of extra weeks seems to warm up the water a bit.

Why grossed out by Pittock?   Now you've got me concerned. Frown  Was thinking of doing Woodstock.

Pittock usually had do not swim advisories by early to mid July due to bacteria counts.  we should be fine because the race is in early June.  I am still planning on racing.  I guess a lot of the other lakes are spring fed, but Pittock is surface water, so the temps get warmer and more bacteria.

Thanks for the reassurance.   Actually Guelph Lake gets pretty bad too.   This year it was even earlier than usual.   Kind of depressing.    We did find another place about 45 minutes from us - Gulliver's Lake that apparently alot of triathletes use and it is supposed to be clean water.

I was also planning to do the Woodstock sprint in June. Should be cold enough, eh? Let's hope so.

Guelph Lake makes me want to puke every time I swim there (and not just figurativally)

There are quite a lot of farms near the lake and all the fertilizer runs off into the lake and water shed with each rain. After a heavy rain the bacteria counts go through the roof.

The beach is also quite nasty - the goose crap squishes out between the toes as you enter the water...

I enjoy the bike and run parts of the race there but becasue of the water, I think I'll give Guelph Lake a pass this year.

We're getting to that point as well.
