I own a forerunner 405, want to upgrade for triathlon. Some say go Polar, some say stay Garmin and go for 310xt, Anybody has suggestions? Am very confused! I searched on this site but no conclusive findings. HELP!I already posted in the Gear thread. Any help would be great!

Hey Rockfalls95,

I am some what new to Triathlons as well but I will give my 2 cents...lol

I own the Gramin 405 and although you can use it for running and for the bike. I am going to get a $60-$80 bike computer and just use the 405 for running. I just feel that its less fussing around and less switching from setting to setting for the different functions. Last summer I did use the 405 for both and worked very well I think I will still use it on the bike but to just track my heart rate.

Happy Holidays

I don't know much about the Polar GPS functionality but the models I had seen with it didn't have it built into the watch but it's in a footpod or some other attachment.

Personally for tris - if you have the money - i'd say go with the 310x.  It has heart rate, gps and lots of cool training features. And it's waterproof. Although it doesn't measure distance well in the water it's perfectly usable for races and you'll get a split for your swim.  Oh and the longer battery life is a big plus over the 305.

But I am biased I have the 305 and LOVE it. That said, it's really best for working out outdoors. You can turn off the gps but it's awfully big.  I don't have the 405 which looks prettier but from what I understand it's not really suited to multisport.

But on the main forums there's a polar rep who's around - you could ask any specific questions to him in the 'Tri Talk' forum.

Anyone else have thoughts on the polar?

No thoughts on the polar - but I love my 305.  I've got no plans to move to the 310, simply because I don't need that bit of extra memory.  And as for swimming, I can't imagine trying get my wetsuit over that behometh without wrecking the suit.

305 all the way.

x2  I got mine in November and it's awesome!  I have the kit for my bike and like GoFaster said - I don't know how you would get a wetsuit over it.  I have to wait until I'm all dressed to go out to put it on because I can't get even my jacket sleeves over it!

I wouldn't bother with the 310xt... it would be intermittent during the swim unless you wear it under your cap... if you wear it on your wrist, it's just another thing to fuss with when removing your suit with the already slightly inconveniencing timing chip... T1 is already slow.  305 you'd be able to switch from bike to run fairly quickly.

There was a comparison in a Triathlete magazine a few issues ago stating the strengths and weaknesses of the various options out there (Garmin, Polar, Suunto, etc.)

Well, thank you to all of you! I got my 305 and loving it! Had 70$ worth of Costco money so I got it for pretty cheap! Planning on keeping my 405 though, just for runs, it is less bulky. I just have to figure out how to download all training sessions in one software program!
Thank you for your help!
