How does your body tell you you are overtraining? Soreness? Fatigue -mental/physical? How easy is it to confuse poor nutrition with over-work?

I can usually tell when I'm there, but I was just curious what others might experience.

Mental fatigue comes first for me. Physical fatigue shortly after that. I typically don't feel too sore, but just through years of trial and error, I've learned to do medium, easy then hard workouts, followed by a rest day (or two, if needed). I can do easy/medium/hard/rest, but I can typically get better gains med/easy/hard/rest.

Oh, and my nutritional needs start to change. I'll feel either much more hungry, or I just won't feel hungry at all. To me, this is a sign to 'lighten up'.

I'm still learning what my symptoms are. I'll tell you what though, I am BEAT today. And I want to eat a ton of sugar.

A good way to know is when you find that your legs feel tired (on the bike), but you can't get your heart rate very high.

i think there's a fine line between "the edge" of consistently hard workouts, and over-training.

my triathlon coach advised me to keep the vast majority of my workouts within the 60-70% hr zone and to incorporate hard/speed sessions weekly. if i begin to suffer from over-training, my workouts suffer and i begin to lose sleep while my hr is higher then usual.

when i have a really long, hard training session or race, i get home and eat & drink till im full then crawl into bed and sleep
its not really overtraining as such - just pushing it to the limit when i do train. If you remember that rest days are just as important as the training itself, you'll be set

When I am reaching the overtraining point I get cranky and irritable first and then feel like I don't want to train for a day or two.
I also get intense cravings for sugar, wake up in the middle of the night (although fall asleep easily), and I just don't feel like myself in general. I hate those type of days.......

I can tell when I overtrain because I don't feel like getting up for another day of physical activity. That's when I take a couple of good rest days, maybe go for walks, breakfast with my husband, etc.

After a few days of that I'm itching to get back.

I haven't usually identified it as overtraining -- I have chalked it up to being lazy on a particular day. I don't feel that I train all that hard, so it is difficult to "blame" it on overtraining. But yesterday is a perfect example -- I felt too tired for an afternoon bike ride in the gorgeous, sunny 60 degree day!! THAT is not like me. I felt just generally icky -- not really sick, but kind of on the verge of being sick -- stomach issues, etc..

This morning seems better, but I am taking a day off from work -- and if I am wise (we shall see), I will take the day off from training.

The area of nutrition is one I truly need to concentrate on, and could be a big contributor to my malaise.

Warning signs for me are: stiffness, decreased performance, lack of interest, insomnia, feeling hyper and decreased appetite.
