Plan on volunteering at IMLP. Any opinions, suggestions on the best position to apply for?

I worked the Boathouse aid station from 8 pm to midnight. It's the last station before the finish. You can hear the finish line party, hear Mike Reilly telling people they are Ironmen, and see all the athletes go deep for that final push to the line. Truly inspiring. If you are lucky, you might get to run into the Oval with the final finisher. It is awesome!Kelly

I actually worked two positions at IMLP in 2009.

Safety Diver (underwater at the starting line) ..... very cool if your qualified. More than likely I'll be there again this year

Then later in the day in transition. Transition was a blast. I think just about anywhere is cool - I'd like to do that again !!

I had a BLAST in the changing tents.  It's REALLY hard work, but you actually get to interact with a lot of athletes for more than 2 seconds at a time.

AND I got to strip Heather Gollnick's wetsuit...TOTAL highlight!

x whatever on the transition area! I was there at IMLP with WittyCityGirl this past year. Not only was it front and center of all the action, but I felt like it gave me a much better idea of what to expect at an Ironman (which I will be doing in July!), and I even picked up some new ideas on what to bring in my own transition bags.

The best part was how inspiring it was. Some of the people who came through there--from the pros to the 60-something-year-old grandmother--just totally knocked my socks off. It's an incredible experience. So glad I did it!

I have done the finishers chute at Redman hanging medals and supporting athletes right after they crossed.  Total blast!  I am sure you will have fun whichever point you decide to volunteer.  In fact, I am volunteering at the finish line of the Carlsbad Marathon this weekend!

Last year I did body marking at Iron Girl Las Vegas, as well as T2, and was at the second to last turn around bike station for the Las Vegas Silverman.

I had a great time at both spots.  Saw lots of fantastic athletes, and decided to only do the 1/2 Silverman this year from what I observed.

Swim volunteer at IMAZ in 08 was a blast (kayak).  After I did it, I was able to watch for the rest of the day.

Swim volunteer at IMAZ - helping people out of the water, I helped carry a man who was paralyzed from the waist down onto his wheelchair . It's tough to do that and then complain about being sore during your training.

I highly recommend being a "Finish Line Catcher" I did it at IMLOU in 2008 and throughly enjoyed it. You get to see and feel the wide range of emotions the people have when they cross the finishs line.

I even helped a guy get back up after he got on his knees after a marriage proposal. (She accepted by the way)

It inspired me to start training for an IM.

If you are planning on doing an IM someday, one place you will learn a LOT is in the transition area. I've been in the IM Wisconsin women's T2 change area for the past two years and learned more than I can tell you about IM transitions simply by observing.

Lots of emotion in transition, too... blood, salt, tears, despair, hope, encouragement, inspiration, injuries, determination. The kind of stuff you won't see by hanging out on the side of the road or manning a water table.
