TriBee - 2010-11-10 7:02 PM Yes, I want to do the 7 am swim tomorrow am. But it's not clear to me about how to make the logistics work. How do we get back from the end of the swim? And out of the water at the end of the swim?

Tribee Just meet me at Blockade runner at 7:15am and I will drive you back to your car when we get out. The way we get out is one person just hops out and  one person sits in the water giving folks a leg to hop out and we all get nice and quit no mess no fuss. I am taking two other people back blockade after the swim and you all can through your wetsuits in my trunk. Call me if you have questions. I have your number and sent you a message the other day  and gave you mine.

Livestrong since you know the way to swim from the Blockade you mind if we meet you there?
Brian

Sure Brain no problem. I am sure I have room to drive you back to Blackade runner after we swim. I have VW Rabbit and already have 2 people and me and Maybe Tribee if she reposonds.

Hey guys, is the "Blackade runner" something I can find on the map? I for sure want to meet for the swim. Although I'll need to drive there... I think.

Missed your post last night.  Very Easy to find as Daniel showed address above.  Go there and we will have room for you to drive you back at the end of the swim.

Thanks guys! I'll be there some 6:45am!

By the way, is anyone bringing along their significant (non-tri) others to Fat Joe's?

HumanVelocity - 2010-11-11 5:48 AM Two options for getting back to blockage runner. ITs only a mile on foot.

1) Run. Serious. Leave shoes/gear hidden and run back after you swim. Just hide your gear in the bushes near the entrance. We do it all the time.

2) Figure out a way to get a ride. Since there will be probably lot of people, getting a ride will probably be as easy as asking. I dont think anyone will say no.

I missed the relevant informative post. What's the deal? I drive out to the Blade Runner, & then swim but I need a ride back to my car (at the Blade Runner)? Obviously, I'm not from the area!

Hey all!
Plan leaves in three hours!  I heard there was a group heading out for a swim tomorrow morning?  The place we are renting has a boat dock and am hoping I can get in the water from there.  Since its about 1/2 mile (I think from blockade) may be hoof it from my place to blockade and swim back.  LOL, too much to worry about.

Hopefully my next post will be from  Wrightsville!

Safe travels everyone. Stpuid question. I normally put butt buttr on right before a ride, and in a tri will do the same before the swim and just go with it. For this one, I want to reapply in T1 for obvious reasons. My Q is that I only have 1 tube of buttr, so can you access your T1 bag the morning of the race? That way I can apply everything in the hotel, slide on down to T1, put the tube in my T1 bag and slide along to the bus to the swim start. Is that possible? Like I said, maybe a stupid question but I don't know what the deal is. Also, what about pumps in T1? Where do you put on (floor pump) if you take one with you? Or so you just rely on the bike tech guys to have one to borrow? I have tubies that leak quite a bit so will need to pump in T1.

To be safe, I'd either buy a small tube as suggested above, or squeeze some into a zip-lock baggie.

I'll miss the swim tomorrow morning -- I don't arrive until Fri afternoon.  I might try to get to dinner if we arrive in time.

There is a vendor at the expo selling half price gear including swim socks, neoprene caps, compressions socks, toe covers, jerseys, shorts and more. Don't buy these items from the first guys you see. I sure stocked up!

Hallloooo North Carolina!

Got my pack. Wow, a full towel. Never gotten one of those before. Purple bracelet for full. Had an issue with that, they gave me the silver one and apparently that's for the HIM people. Dunno that it makes any difference but I'll get funny looks at the swim start with the wrong bracelet, though. Now I gots a purkle one.

i plan on swimming with everyone friday morning at 7 am at the blockade runner.....

couple of questions
1.  how far are we swimming?
2.  i guess we will get the logistics worked out in the AM, but like others, i am not clear as to how we are getting from swim end back to the blockade....not sure that i want to walk back to the hotel....in a wetsuit.....

see everyone bright and early tomorrow.  i will will be a tall goofy looking guy.....

after the swim i will go pick up my packet and bags and then go back eat lunch, pack my bags and check my bike in and i plan to go to the 2 pm meeting....

which meeting is everyone else going to?

Ian

Hey all!

I am here, supposedly about a block or two from Blockade runner.  We got a sweet place and having a great evening.  Grilled some steaks and am sipping on a beer.  Hoping to see you guys tomorrow morning but not sure.

I'm bringing a (non-tri) sherpa along with me to Fat Tony's tomorrow. See you then.

I did the swim this am. My toes and finger tips got cold during the swim, and I got really cold on the walk from the swim exit across the street to where transition will be, even though I had booties on. Took me an hour, in a car with the heat on high, to thaw out.

Highly recommend the booties, even if you swim warm. The road is rough surface and today those without them vowed to pick some up today.

Are we not going to have carpet from the beach to T1?

Hi guys! I also did the swim this AM with TriBee, Livestrong, bcooper and a few other awesome folks. Many thanks to Livestrong for showing us the ropes! I wore my full suit with booties and honestly, I felt a bit warm during the last quarter of the swim. I was worried that my hands would be cold but they weren't at all. I could probably do without booties too, but like TriBee mentioned above, the run from the docks to T1 is on mostly chip & seal and it HURT (and I am not a tenderfoot). There will not be a carpet. The current is roaring. We swam at 7:15am, so it was only the beginning of incoming tide. The route from the Blockade Runner to the Sea Path marina is 1500m. I swam it in just over 21 minutes. You will be fast! Went for a 25 min run right after the swim. I ran in my bathing suit and a pair of running shorts and was quite comfortable with the temp. I do tend to run a bit hotter than most, however. Best wishes to everyone! My husband and I are doing the half, but at long as our legs allow us to, we will be cheering throughout the night from either the finish line or from in front of the Hilton. ETA: Sorry for raging typos and lack of hard returns. I'm typing this from my phone.

that won't happen due to the length of the track across the street and down the road.  Tribee is correct I was one who did not have the booties and having numb feet walking on the rocky pavement was not fun.

Enjoyed swiming and eating dinner with you and your husband today.  Picked up the wife and went for yogurt afterwards.  Good luck to you and your husband on the HIM and hope to see you.

If your feet are numb, how does the pavement hurt? ;-)  jk

Thank you everyone on the swim feedback.  I may head out tomorrow at 9, but I've been sick all week and I'm trying to give my body a chance at this thing.

We did have carpet from the swim to T1 at IMLP and it's probably the same distance but I do agree that it is quite far to do that.

I have a question about the swim start.  I do have some throwaway sandals that I was hoping to wear to the start.  Is there going to be a place for me to trash these things right before jumping in, or do I need to put them in the morning clothes bag?  Thanks!

I think that there was carpet across the road during the Wilmington sprint.

Also, as you leave Sea Path, there is a gate house.  The concrete there is smooth and gets SLIPPERY.  BE CAREFUL.  There will probably be a volunteer there to remind you.

There wasn't any last year. There was some indoor/outdoor grass type stuff on the dock and then just asphalt/concrete for the sidewalks and road.

OK. I didn't do "the" swim, but I took a dip. If you're still considering it, I now highly recommend booties. This is coming from someone who learned to swim on Lake Michigan's sub 50 degree water--no wetsuit.

Anyway, looking forward to tonight's dinner. (Steve from Michigan, the restaurant's "Fat Joes".
