AAHHH!!!  Just saw this!

Tri to Beat Cancer

I did a presentation/paper in my Sports Marketing class last semester on proposing a Sprint Triathlon in Athens, GA with Start/Finish/Transition at Sandy Creek Park.  I called it the Classic City Sprint though.  Jim Rainey and the GAMultisport crew has beaten me to the punch!  Well at least it turned out to be a worthy idea...  I wonder how close the maps will be to mine!

I might just sign up for the heck of it!

Oooh, that sounds like a good race. Even better, I can probably crash in someone's apartment rather than getting a hotel.

Phaknot's family, The Slayers, may be able to set up some social after or something if there's some interest.

I'm sure I'll do this one.  It'll be a good end of the year one, unless I do the St Simons one.  I did my very first (by first I mean pretty much walked) 5k at Sandy Creek.

I was actually talking to Micah @Ga Cycle about that race last week.  The main question we had was what the bike route is going to look like. One would think that part of it at least would have to be on Hwy 441.  Interested to see how they pull that off.  My wife actually says I have to do that as she is in the Athens Area Cancer Auxillary.

Thats what I'm screamin'.  They would definitely have to close one lane if they used 441.  Seems like that would be a logistical nightmare.  That Sandy Creek 5k is a blast though. Athens is dying for more races like this.

It'd have to be closed and you'd have to have police blocking a lane by law because it is a federal highway.  It'd most likely be safer than ever.

I would think they'll use the access road that links the park and 441, and just do a couple of laps on it + the roads inside the park. Closing 441 would be kind of a nightmare, especially with some kind of out and back route having people ride the wrong way down half a lane.

...it'd be like a crit!  :P

Could get interesting. Mapped the park road and looks to be a 3.4 mile loop, so looking at around 4 laps. Maybe they will keep the lap count on the honor system. Wink

Yeah, won't be making it this year. It's two(ish) weeks before Nation's. There's always next year, though.

This will be my first triathlon ever.  I'm following one of the training schedules on got on this site so I know I will be ready.  This one looks like fun.  Is it the first year for it?  I can't find any prior year reviews or anything.

Uphill climb right out of park...HWY 441 is pretty busy - a couple to traffic lights before the turn onto the country roads....by country roads, I mean country roads....windy and no shoulders....horse and chicken farms to add to the scenery...then back to 441.....not sure how the traffic will be routed, but at least there wasn't too much out there.

This was a very nice event.  The weather was perfect, there were plenty of sponsors, volunteers, food, drink, and cool awards too.   The park was pretty and able to accommodate vehicles (I got there early 5:15am), transition area, and all the other stuff.   Kudos to the organizers!  I got 3rd in my age group.  Not bad for my first tri in 20 years.  How did you do?

Congrats to runatlanta for winning the overall race !!

I had really fun race today...although I didn't win anything its the first time I really put all the parts of a race together. I was 67th overall.

The venue is good at this park and was well run overall. I think this race will stick around for Athens area.

I say it was run very well,I will go back next year for sure.

I was 50th over and  first in my ageLaughingI ride tubulars and ran over a  small rock with my front wheel at about mile 13.Then is noticed I was going flat in the front wheel and just before the turn off  from 411 I was flat but rode it in on the  HED3 !!!

Ditto on the weather and venue.  Was a nice tri to get back "into" it.  Hadn't done one for 2 years.  Today was the first time I swam in over 2 years and only the 2 time I got a decent bike ride in this year.  Just missed 3rd place by a few minutes.  Maybe if I decide to get serious....

The other competitors I had to share a bike rack with in transition were a bunch of whiners.  One guy claiming some one "touched his stuff" and he was gonna find out who.  Whatever!  Then some of the punks at the award ceremony from one of the tri clubs were being pretty obnoxious and offensive.

Anyway - Congrats on the award.

Well done gang! I hope that wasn't my tri club. If so, I'd like to know so we can put it right.

Here's a story in the local rag:
