Overall Rank = 653/934
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 88/105
Pre-race routine:

Yoghurt, Clif Bar & OJ & then left for the race early. Got there very early & set up mny transition & ran into a bunch of other BT'ers. Went down to the water with about 20 mins to go & got into the water a little bit, but not all the way. Wasn't nearly as nervous as I expected, the start just kind of happened.
Event warmup:

Short easy jog & stretching.
Swim
  • 22m 14s
  • 750 yards
  • 02m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty horrible. Took about 10 strokes & couldn't breathe at all. Not a panic, just couldn't breathe so switched right over to breast stroke & did that for most of the race except for a few short stretches of freestyle. Ran into (or more like I was so slow they ran into me) a few people, but no collisions or anything.

In the beginning as I was realizing I couldn't breathe I stopped & looked up as I switched to breast stroking & just a whole bunch of churning water in front of me, just like on TV which I thought was pretty cool.
What would you do differently?:

MORE OW SWIMMING!!! More warm-up to get face and body used to water temp.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Good transition except forgot to put on watch part of hrm (chest strap was already on) and pick up gu.
What would you do differently?:

Layout things I need on top of bike shoes so I don't forget them. Practice doing things in a certain order.
Bike
  • 53m 2s
  • 17.1 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Probably went a little harder than the race plan because I forgot the hrm but it worked out well. Was able to get back some time lost in the poor swim. I could feel I was working my legs somewhat hard here and there so I was a little concerned about not having anything left for the run but I think it was a good pace overall.

Got a flat with about a mile to go (it might have been going flat for a while but I only noticed it entering the last straightaway). Considered getting off & running the rest, but the wheel was still rolling so took it slow & made it into the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Wish I had some water in addition to the bottle of gatorade since my mouth got sticky.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Legs were feeling it when I got off. Had a little trouble racking my bike since the guys next to mine was crooked. forgot to pick up hrm again.
What would you do differently?:

Speed laces? ok over all.
Run
  • 30m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Crikey! Kept the pace I right where wanted, and everyone was passing me but pace was MUCH faster than my training runs (9:41/mile compared to usually around 11:00/mile in training). Did NOT feel that fast at all. Legs were a bit heavy coming off the bike - much more so than in training bricks but got into a plugging-away rhythm once I got over the 1st hill.

Felt good at the turn-around so I decided to pick up the pace a little but started to feel a crap coming on so backed down to my previous pace. Was feeling it at the end and probablt couldn't have gone much farther so seems like my pace worked out perfectly for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, light stretching & got some food. Didn't see any BT'ers but Bobby & Christine showed up which was very cool.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I spent more energy on the swim than planned due to breast stroking nearly the whole thing.

Event comments:

Good showing for my 1st race. Lots of room for improvement. Was kind of surprised with how competitive I got during it, but was lots of fun.

Great job - especially since this was your first race!!!  I looked for you after the race but didn't see you again - hope you had fun

Lucky you didn't get that flat earlier!

Hey nice race drew!  I saw a red Guru bike go screaming by me and I thought that was you!    didn't know you were racing though!  Of course, stacers told me later.

You did great!

Thanks. I looked for you guys too but I couldn't find anyone. I'll definatly be seeing more of you guys at the gravel pond.

FYI - it should be "I felt a CRAMP coming on" during the run, not a crap (although that's much funnier). I guess I should proofread better since I guess you can't edit race reports...

Yeah, you can edit it (I think). Go into the races thing on your blog and you can edit from there. But I say leave it, that made me laugh so hard.

Bummer I didn't see you. I was cutting off chips at the finish, but I was kind of incognito with a big hat and shades on and I was really only looking at people's ankles. We'll have to go do an OW swim together sometime. I'm thinking about doing one of the OW swim/run races this week.... But your run, AWESOME! That gives me hope to see you run so much faster than your training runs! And 19.5 mph on the bike... damn!

It was nice to meet you Drew!  That swim did bite the big one.  Your bike was INCREDIBLE, especially if you had to slow down for the last mile for a flat.

So whens the next race?

Excellent race!  You were lucky with the flat!  You must have good karma.

We're going to have to get a banner (or better still, a tent for shade!) so we have a designated place to meet!  Sorry to have missed you, but I'll look for you next time!
