Pre-race routine:

Race didn't start until 9am. Slept until 7am, then two small bowls of granola w/soy milk, big cuppa coffee, and some water. Drove to the race with Heidi. Parked and shuttled to the start. Stood in the porta-potty line, peed, then started!
Event warmup:

None. Figured the race was long enough.

Comments:

I was "supposed" to do a progressive training run, going out around 9:00 (or 9:15), then get :15 faster every 4 miles. Yeah, so much for that. We were out around 8:45 and felt good and went with it. Heidi and I push each other pretty well -- she maintained this was my race and she was just gonna tag along. Around mile 5 she warned me I was picking it up, so we pulled it back. Per usual, she was faster on the hills (not by a ton, but enough to have me not hold back and push on). We knew we were going too fast but we were enjoying it. I had a little more in the tank than her at the last mile, so she let me go, but she wasn't far behind. We were THRILLED with our run, really. We sort-of hoped we could go about a 1:55. I was not rested and hadn't run this far in awhile. So really, it was a great run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I don't think. We'll see if I pay the fiddler next week during my training, but for now I'm super-pleased with the effort and the time.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Got some water and oranges and about 1/2 of a bagel. Stood around way too long talking with friends before heading back to the shuttle. Saw a guy go down about 20 yards from the finish, and a friend with us is a nurse, so she started to help. In summary, the guy lost his pulse, had to be de-fibbed, and the ambulance came and he had a pulse when we left. Really freaked me out and disturbed and upset me. So very, very sad and scary.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training and confidence, mostly the latter. I've been training hard, didn't rest, and didn't want to kill myself on this run. Pushed it nice and hard and am happy with the results, although in hindsight had I had more confidence in my ability I could have gone faster. It makes me excited to tackle another half soon.

Event comments:

I enjoy this race. It's a challenging course but a really fun run.
