I went straight out of undergrad (B.S. Biological Engineering) in 2008 into a Master's program at the same university (Louisiana State University---GEAUX TIGERS!!).

The past two years have been absolutely brutal.  I had a very demanding major professor who really pushed me.  Of course this was good in a way.  But I'm such a high-strung A-type personality who wants everything perfect, too.

In the end it all worked out well.  I defended my thesis this morning to my committee members.  They didn't have much for me to correct on my thesis, so I'll be submitting that to the graduate school next week!  Smile

Just wanted to share with my fellow COJers.  You guys have really helped with comic relief over the past two years, so I feel indebted to ya'll.

LOL.  Don't I know it!

Yup, I'm moving to Hattiesburg, MS at the beginning of May.  I accepted a nice little offer to work for a rather large company in Laurel, MS.

It's ideal since I'll finally be living in the same city as my fiance (soon-to-be-wife).

Congrats!

When I defended my master's, I was so exhausted that it didn't actually sink in for a few days.  Pretty anti-climactic, actually.  Glad to see it sounds like you're already fully embracing your Mastery.

Congratulations! That's a hard-earned (and thus well-deserved) achievement! (And I say that as a prof who tends to push her students in as good a way as possible...Cool)

Awesome! Nice when all that hard work ends up being worth it!

I feel your pain on grad school being brutal. I'll know how you feel right now in December!

Interesting is one word for it . . . ;-)

Good luck!  An engineering degree (in my humble opinion) is a very valuable degree.  So many options.

Thesis submission was the greatest relief of my life. I was exhausted and stressed, but seeing it bound and beautiful and signing the submission log was like instant relief.

There may or may not have been celebrations.

There should be many and varied celebrations for you too! Congratulations, it's a big achievement.

Congrats,  I did the same thing in 2001 going straight into grad school to get my masters in Civil Engineering.  One of the best experiences of my life talking with the other nerds about what probably only we care about.  My thesis defense was one of the most nerve racking times of my life.  Two members of my thesis committee actually started arguing and I let them eat up time.

My golf game got pretty good too.  I don't know how your job market is but good luck in your job search.

Haha, that's great about your defense.  I was SO stressed before mine.  In our department, all faculty (and all of the graduate students) are invited to attend.  This makes for intense questions, since the only folks that have actually read the thesis are the committee members.  Thus, the presentation is CRITICAL.  If you miss an important point, the faculty that haven't read the thesis are totally lost, opening the door for some off-the-wall questions.

However, on the morning of my defense, the only people who showed up were my committee members!  I was stoked.  No really off-the-wall questions, pretty straight-forward, and answerable questions.  No corrections required on my thesis, so it's going to the Graduate School today!!  Cool

Thanks for the wishes of luck in my job search, but I've already secured a job.  I had been applying since November to be sure I found something.  I ended up with two concurrent offers, and was able to choose the one that fit me best.  The job search really sucked while trying to finish my thesis.  Glad it's all over.

That is why I scheduled mine in the late afternoon after most of the profs went home.  A little strategy goes a long way.  A few other grad students were there and nicely lobbed a few softball questions that made me look good.
