Overall Rank = 1000/1003
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 131/131
Pre-race routine:

Woke up a little before 4 am got dressed and went down to have breakfast with the rest of the other TnT members. We left the hotel at around 5 am to ride our bikes to the transition area. This was a nice little warm up.
Event warmup:

Riding from the hotel to transition area, about 6 to 10 miles.
Swim
  • 57m 53s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 52s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Well, basicly my swim sucks big time. Need to spend more time in the pool to get better on the swim.
Transition 1
  • 06m 7s
Comments:

Need to do something diferent to get the wetuit off quicker, and maybe even change the bike shoes to make them easier to get on.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe have a stool so that I can sit down to remove the wetsuit and be able to get back up easier. Sitting on the ground, I didn't want to get back up as it was harder work on exhausted mussels.
Bike
  • 2h 04m 56s
  • 40 kms
  • 19.21 km/hr
Comments:

The first hill was too soon, and I hadn't recovered from the swim to have the legs for the hill. I had to walk this first hill. I was able to stay on the bike for all other hills, except having to stop on one when the chain kicked off. Put the chain back on, and continued up the hill on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on my hills. I do hills at 3 to 4 miles per hour. I need to practice picking up my pace on the hills.
Transition 2
  • 04m 46s
Comments:

Had to sit again to remove the ike shoes and put on my running shoes, again had trouble getting back up from the ground.
What would you do differently?:

Some kind of stool to sit on during transition. Also I think I want to try speed laces for the running shoes and maybe even the bike shoes.
Run
  • 1h 49m 2s
  • 10 kms
  • 10m 54s  min/km
Comments:

I walked the 10k, about half way my hip starting acheing. I am not sure why this happened, but it then started my lower back hurting the last few miles I was limping and slowing down in my movement. Also the water at the water stops was all warm by this point and didn't help much at all.
What would you do differently?:

One thing I would do, is not loose my gels. I had put two gels in my pocket, but when I went to get one out they were gone. Also I need to pick my pace up and start working at jogging.
Post race
Warm down:

I didn't really do anything but walk to the TnT tent to sit down and drink water, and eat a box lunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to train harder and more consistently.

Event comments:

The only thing I didn't like was that the drink stations didn't have ice to keep the water cold. Also the Heed the last water stations had was the lemon-lime that I can't drink, it tastes horrible to me.

Ed Note: I checked the web site and noticed my place keeps falling back. I think they are getting times for some of the listed on the original results ad possible DNFs. So I wanted to update this site with the current results.

Congrats Dirk ...way to hang in there with the hot conditions ....I volunteered on Saturday and competed on race day, so i know that there was ice at the aid stations but it melted ...I was in the 10th swim wave so the water was warm by the time I was out there on the run ....the race director is a friend of mine and already has that on his list for next year ....

Hey Dirk,

Great job despite the hot conditions and the lack of cold water. You finished! That's something to be proud of. Now on to the next one...

GREAT job pushing through and finishing the race despite the pain. It's hard to come off a hard swim and get your breath back
