Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Galveston, Texas
United States
EndorFUN SPORTS
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 26m 39s
Overall Rank = 297/1326
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 55/217
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at about 4:30am, ate a bagel with peanut butter and honey and left for Galveston. Didn't stay at Moody Gardens with my wife because I got called into work (IT issue). Had a great night sleep at home so I can't complain.
Event warmup:

No real warm, just tried to calm the nerves. Spoke to Ken, Keri, John, Nikki, and Tiff prior to the start which helped a lot.
Swim
  • 45m 2s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was slower than I thought but also easier than expected. I guess I could have pushed a bit harder, but over all I was pleased. The water was choppier than I thought, but I had no problem getting into my slow groove.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little bit harder
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I was in row e, but row e had two sides...... duh. Had to run around the rack and these racks were long.
What would you do differently?:

Go down the correct row.
Bike
  • 2h 42m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr
Comments:

Consider the wind this ride went perfect. Coming out of the swim I was 6 minutes slower than expected, but rather push the bike I accepted the time and went along with the plan. I wanted to average 21 mph, but on the way out I just rode by perceived effort (no heart rate monitor) and averaged just a shade over 20. I was able to negative split the bike for a final average of 20.7, but was able to conserve some energy for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Decided not to ride on the top of my shoes and take the extra time in T2. Just didn't want to make any mistakes in a race that would take close to 6 hours. What's a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Be more efficient.
Run
  • 1h 54m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was to run between 8:45 and 9 minutes pace but once again I was running blind, or should I say using perceived effort. My first lap was 8:10 pace, second lap was 8:30. Needless to say I went out too hard. 3rd lap was 9:09 pace and the 4th lap was 9:03 pace. I think I was lucky to hold together and was very thankful to the kids who squirted me with their "super soaker". The run was hotter than I expected, but I was able to run the entire run. I would slow down to make sure I was able to get a full cup of fluids at the aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

Pace better on the first few miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Was greeted by my wife, brother, mother, step father, keri and ken. Drank lots of fluids, ate twenty wings, fried jalapenos, french fries, and some beer and sleep!!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The unknown. This was my first HIM so I was conservative on the swim and bike, but I think I may have been able to push harder on the bike and swim.

Event comments:

Volunteers were great, and the atmosphere was very exciting.

Congrats on your first 70.3!

Great execution and racing on perceived effort.

Waves and maybe current made that long leg seem even longer. It was great to see fans out on the bike course and on much of the run course.

I'll probably push too hard on the bike and blow up on the run, expecting everything to go perfect again. It was a lot of hard work, but I got lucky that everything feel into place as well.

Anyone already tweaking a nearly perfect race plan for the next one two days after the event is a hero in my eyes.  You crushed this first HIM and you are already finding areas to improve for next year.  Great job Justin!!  So stoked you nailed your goal.

Awesome race.  Very cool that you had enough discipline to stick to your plan and not push it to hard on the bike.  I hope I carry out my plan near as well as you did yours.
