St. Anthony's Triathlon
Total Time = 2h 32m 23s
Overall Rank = 537/3192
Age Group = W40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/147
Pre-race routine:

Had some coffee and ate a piece of toast with sunbutter and nutella..walked down to transition and set up. Walked back to hotel, tried to eat some more and sip on some watered down infinit. Walked down to the swim start - hugged Betsy and Bridget then stood around for a bit talking to Sue.
Event warmup:

No warm up.
  • 28m 53s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters

Swimming out was fine. I had to stop once and empty my goggle - didn't want to lose a contact. Made the first turn and could see nothing. Goggles were fogged bad and the bouys were obstructed by the waves. My sighting was awful!!! AFter the second turn, it got a little rougher, which was not expected! I kept trying to sight but kept ending up way too far to the right of the bouys...WHen I finally got close to the start, I had to swim parallel to the sea wall for about 200 meters.
What would you do differently?:

Wear different goggles and really work on sighting in rough water more!! I should have had a better swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s

I had a pretty good transition. Got my suit to my hips while running, cap and goggles off...once at my spot, removed wetsuit, threw glasses and helmet on, slipped bike shoes on, grabbed garmin and GUs and was off.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
  • 1h 13m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.32 mile/hr

As soon as I hopped on my bike, my right aeropad flew off :o oops! I was riding down the cobblestone putting my gus in my pocket and slipping my garmin on. Got settled and took off. It took about 25 minutes for my legs to warm up. Once they did I felt pretty good. LOTS of gear changing with the shifts in wind and frequent turns. Toward the end we got a few straighaways with good tailwind so I just tried to lay it down a little there.

I tried to run over every obstacle in the road...including an insulated water bottle. I did pretty good with this ;) Also lost a water bottle coming in, and got some air on the first speed bump by the golf course :o.

It was windy out, but the conditions are not much different than what I have been training in. Far from a PR, but times on the bike were slower for everyone I think. It was a pretty good effort for me.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get some more calories in earlier in the day...should have taken a GU first thing on the bike when my legs weren't responding.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s

Ran the route I planned. Racked my bike, removed helmet, slipped on my flats, grabbed my number belt, GUs and visor and took off. No messing around here!
What would you do differently?:

Coming in I took my feet out of my shoes which was a disaster...feet kept slipping off time I would just keep them on and unclip and run...the cobblestone changes everything at this race!
  • 46m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 29s  min/mile

Took off a little fast but not out of control. A girl in my AG passed me coming in from the bike..I got her within a mile of the run - think it was pretty early on. Gave a shout out to Betsy, had a quick chat and just focused on getting it done. I was a breathless for most of it, but was able to control the breating a little after the first mile or so. Just kept the calories and liquids coming in as planned and tried to surge when I felt I could. Passed another girl in my AG. The last 1/2 mile I was running with a 24 year old...she took off the final stretch but I couldn't hang! She pushed me a little but once I saw her calf said "24" and not "44" I kind of backed off.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Happy with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing really. Stood around looking for our crew, hangin with B. Eventually grabbed some beans and rice! YUM!!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim :) I was a little under 2' behind 5th and 4th place, who were 1" apart! 3rd place was 3' ahead of me...which I think can be found on the swim and maybe a few less errors on the bike.

Event comments:

Love St. Anthony's weekend. Will be back next year :)
