HURL Elkhorn 50k I have a 50k this weekend. I've lived at altitude (I'm counting 6,000 ft. as altitude) for about a month and am just now running without having to stop every quarter mile to catch my breath. Some of that could also be the month I took off to move after the Kettle 100k. Really hoping this race helps me get in gear again after some time off.

I'm doing the Hot To Trot 8 Hour Race just west of Atlanta this weekend. The forecast is for a low of 73 and a high of 94. Last year we had clouds and drizzle for the first 3 hours. I would love to see that again! Since I'm not in it to win it, I just want to get my 50K in then enjoy the party.

My first 100 miler starts in 29 hours, which is about how long I think it'll take me to finish  Can't wait to climb Hope Pass and Race Across The Sky at Leadville.

I will wish Ryan good luck on his adventure, as if he needs it.

I will also advise that I will be running the brutal IronLegs 50 miler on Saturday, oh, is that tomorrow. Holy cr*p on a cracker batman.

Good Luck!  I read that they changed the route which added 1.6mi each way.

Any word on Ryan?  I checked out the Leadville live results page, but I don't want to believe what it says....

All too true.  I developed acute mountain sickness symptoms going over Hope Pass, but I made it over and back, albeit slowly.  Dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, elevated heart rate, coughing fits, etc got worse on the 1,200' climb out of Twin Lakes, but my wife Alaina got me through it and I was still on pace for a sub-25 hour finish.  I rallied from Half Pipe to Fish Hatchery, which is a flat section, but when I started climbing Sugarloaf Pass, symptoms worsened up to mile 80.  I made it up the first section of Powerline before puking my guts out 4x, shaking uncontrollably, and being unable to walk in a straight line, even with trekking poles.  I knew that climbing 1,600' up to 11,200' would likely have put me at serious health risk.  I pulled the plug and walked back to Fish Hatchery.  Good news is I have no regrets and actually had an awesome time.  I'll get that buckle at the next one!

Aaargh!  Glad you're OK, sounds like a pretty solid decision.

You've made amazing progress so far...And with an attitude and outlook like yours, the possibilities are endless.  Nice work, Ryan.

Crazy weather at the UTMB this weekend.  Ran a modified course in rain, snow, wind, and mud that ended up being ~68.5 miles.  Fun times.  Hope to write something up soon.  You can check out my results here, just type in my bib number:  3437.

Good luck!  Which race are you doing?  Just remember the mantra, "relentless forward motion!"

Thanks,

I like that mantra. The other one I have come to think will keep me going, "I am here for a long time, not a good time."

Redemption.  I got my first 100 mile buckle today at Hallucination 100 trail race in Hell, Michigan, three weeks after DNF-ing at Leadville.  The race started at 4pm Friday, rained for 8 hours overnight, and turned into a shoe sucking mudfest into the next day.  I managed to run an 18:41.  Can't even describe the feeling of crossing the line.

Aweseom! Congrats.  I read on your log that your buddy came in first and you came in second?? That's great. Did you guys run a lot of it together?

I knew my friend was going for the win and the course record, so although we did start together, when we got 1/2 mile into the race doing sub-8 minute miles, I said "good luck!" and hung back.  It does get kinda lonely out there late night if there isn't someone doing the same pace as you.  I listened to podcasts just to hear some human voices!
