I've got Mohican 50 mile trail race in Ohio this weekend, and I'm looking forward to getting on some new trails since I've been burning out all the trails around me.  It's going to be a scorcher out there this weekend in the midwest.  Hope everyone stays hydrated and salted up.

I decided that this is my last ultra before Leadville 100 run in August, so I better make it count!

Hey thanks!  Mohican is a super tough course, with tons of hills, very rocky + rooty terrain, a hand over hand root climb out of a gorge, and beautiful views along the way.  Highlights included several soft pine sections, 200+ foot dropoffs along the ridgeline, and 95% single track.  The 100 milers out there were absolute beasts, for that is one hard race.

I was lucky enough to move up in the ranks almost entirely between miles 42-47, which was a new experience for me and a nice reminder that ultras really are a patient runner's game.

There was no tracker for Mohican -- in fact there weren't even any timing chips!  Just shout out your number at the aid stations, old skool style.  Hopefully Leadville will have more live info on their website.

That looks like an awesome course.  Have a great time out there.  Those first 15 miles are going to be killer!  I was considering this race earlier this year but travel didn't work out.

Had a good race.  It was super hot out which lead to a greater than 50% DNF rate.  I ended up finishing in 7th place with a time of ~26:30.  Nice course and well organized.

I also did the Black Hills 100, my 1st attempt at this distance and unfortunately I DNF'ed at mile 63, the course was tough/ relentless, and the upper 90's made for a super tough race for me, pretty disappointed in myself, never quit a race before but just had nothing left, my electrolytes were off and need to reevaluate my pace, think I went out too hard, which I have a tendency to do, I will be back next year and give it another try, to all who finished my hat is off to you all!

Going 63 miles at Black Hills (in your first 100 mile attempt) in those weather conditions is still a great accomplishment.  It was rough out there.  One definitely needed to stay on top of hydration and electrolytes as any little error would lead to signification negative effects.  Don't feel bad about it.  Learn from this event and the next time you will get it done.  I am sure that if the weather was "normal" you would have probably been just fine.

Hey Bill, big congrats to you on your race!  I was just reading Scott Dunlap's race report, and he mentions your name in there. Some good pics in there, and certainly looks like a helluva tough day.  He says, "Bill Geist took a full shower before hitting the road home (he would get 7th in 26:30)"

I did my first this past Sat! I'm in love! A 50k on a mountain in Angel Fire, NM. Lots of steep rocky climbs with some amazing views! 13 starte the 100, only ONE finished! Lots of people dropped to the 50m or 50k. I'm hooked! Already found another for Oct, and scheduling my first 50mi for Feb!

Nice work.  Glad to hear that you had a good time.  This was the first 100 mile race in NM, so that lone finisher is the only person to have completed a 100 miler in NM.

Thanks for the link.  That report describes the race and conditions well.  My quick summary of the race:

After about 20 miles it got super hot out, so I took it easy and tried to drink as much as possible.  At around mile 30 I took a pretty bad fall and cut my elbows and chin and bruised my right hip really good (the next day I had a black and blue mark the size of my hand).  Coming into the 50 mile turn around I got off course by about a 1 mile and subsequently ran out of water.  I could tell at the 50 mile aid station that I was getting dehydrated and my muscles felt like they were going to cramp.  So I hung out there for over 30 minutes and drank a ton of water.  On the way back I continued to drink lots of water and take salt pills.  It never really did cool off at night but at around mile 70 I was feeling great again.  I was peeing a bunch and my muscles did not feel like they were going to cramp any more.  This was the first 100 mile race I actually ate to lot of solid food so many miles in.  So I actually ran fairly strong from mile 70 to 95 and passed a few people along the way.  When the sun came up the next morning it got hot quickly again and the last few miles were in the full sun.  So I just finished without killing myself.

I was really happy how I recovered during the race and was able to finish strong.  Overall it was a good race with mostly nice single track trail.  The volunteers and organization was great.  Up next is UTMB!

Yes, we sat around for many hours discussing this while waiting for that finisher. He's a young kid, 26 and a strong runner. He'll be a hunted man next year!

The big dance is almost here for me.  Angeles Crest 100 Saturday at 5AM.  I am not too sure if I am more concerned with the 21,000 feet of climbing, the 100 degree temps that are hovering around, or the mileage itself.  I just hope to stay mentally all there and get me a belt buckle!

Good luck and have a great race this weekend!  Looking forward to the RR when you're all done with a big shiny new buckle on your waist.

What's that saying?  It's 90% mental and the rest is all in your head.

A couple guys I run with around here are going to be there as well.  That's one helluva tough but fun looking course.  If you happen to be running with Matt or Steven from Michigan at any point during the day, know that you're in good company with some ultra vets...  And tell them Ryan is cheering for all of you.

Electrolytes and patience (smart pacing), and that buckle will be yours.

Good luck!

My Race Report for Angeles Crest 100:
The start was a blast as we took off out of Wrightwood. I hit the first and second aid station almost dead on with my goal times feeling wonderful.....and then bad happened. At about mile 14 to 15 during a brutal uphill section (2500 feet of climbing in 3.7 miles) early into the race I kicked a rock or tree root. It startled me and it caused my left knee to completely lock up. It hurt a lot but... being stubborn me I pushed on and figured over time maybe the knee would get better. When I got to the top of the world (peak at 9300') I took a short minute break at the Mt Baden Powell sign and gave a monster yell and took off....for about 10 feet. On the downhill I could barely move because I had no strength or support for my left leg. I walked as fast as I have ever done in my life. The wife rolled out the leg at Islip Saddle (mile 26ish) and told me to just go....and go I did and managed to get through Eagle's Roost (31ish) and to 38 miles total at the Cloudburst aid station. The trail was beautiful and consisted of the toughest 38 miles that I have done period. My race came to halt as the time on my timex past the official cut off. I was done and knew that I would have stopped at this point even if I had made the cut off to prevent permanent knee damage. It was just weird to have ever thought that I would need to even worry about a cut off. I took a long break on a rock at the bottom of the last incline just short of the Cloudburst aid station. I thought about the effort that I had put in to train solely for this race and how mentally I was gone for a second and it killed my goal. I then thought about the wonderful support from people out there and the happy thoughts that people had sent my way prior to the race. My wifes encouragement was the last thing I remembered before I felt like I was about to take a nap on the softest rock out there. I was all alone and hadn't seen anyone in a very long time and I was in immense pain and just needed a short break or sleep. Out of nowhere my wife came down towards me and saved me. It was emotional. I am not sure if there will be a next time, but if there is I will avoid kicking stuff.
