matt3liv - 2010-05-13 12:06 PM sounds interesting.  Might consider it.

I still wish they would open up the Straits fo Mackinaw swim each year.  I'd love to do that.

Straits of Mackinac, that would be something! Sounds like they have done this in the past??

They had a swim on Labor Day 2007 to commemorate the Big Mac's 50th anniversary.  Not sure why they don't do it again, or at least I haven't heard of it being done as an event.

Subject: Suit requirements
This would be my first event.......  It states something about a "fina approved suit".  Do I have to actually wear one of the approved suits?  I can't just wear my cheapo from the department store?  It's not like I'm in any danger of winning regardless of what I'm wearing...

Thanks

I think the FINA approved suits are the high-tech speedsuits and stuff of that nature.

I don't think they officially object to the standard man-kini... other than visually.

Ah... CRAP!

I did all the stupid calculations and (after reading the website more closely) saw that they already TOLD us that the cutoff pace was 2:50/100.

Are MY cheeks red!  Embarassed

EDIT:  to sound slightly more educated than the original post

Oh my.  Well, I am officially going to attempt to swim a 5K!  I shall be rearing up the pack.

The sign up through imathlete.com is kinda cool.  It shows you who has registered for the event, and more interesting to me, also what type of times people may have.  (It asked when you register your "expected" time.)  I've never seen this, so it was amusing to me.   It looks like about 60 people are signed up so far.  Also, a couple weeks ago I e-mailed the RD asking how many participants were expected, and she said she really wasn't sure since there's never been an event like this in the area.  She said her "instinct and experience" say around 300, but again really there is no way of knowing.

I'm thinking about signing up for this bad boy.  I haven't swam any significant distance in a long time.  I'm up to about 1 mile in training sessions, and I plan to work up to 3k session before Steelhead.  I should have plenty of time to work up to 4k training sessions.  I should be able to pull another 1k out of my butt by the 22nd.

I wouldn't be racing this though.  Just something fun to complete.  I'd like to go slow and mingle with some other BTers.

I'm going to try to make it for the mile.  If you see someone floating on thier back it will be me.  Racing is't even a possibility for me.  Finishing it will be the goal.  Good luck to everyone.

I just registered for the 5k.  Should be interesting!

I'm hoping things work out and I'm going to bring my bike for a little ride afterwards, I know of a nice 60 mile route if anyone is in the mood for some saddle time.

Yikes.  I think we are in for some cold water.  I checked the water temp at fishingnotes.com for one of the lakes (Patterson) and it's currently estimated at 71F.  And the weather's supposed to cool off a bit looking at the extended forecast- yes, very reliable.   Or is 71 just not that cold? What is standard pool temperature??  (I swim at LTF if anyone specifically knows what their lap pool is set at...)  I hate getting into the pool because it just feels so dang cold when you first jump in!!

I don't think 71 will feel that bad.  Especially when we're swimming for that long, I think maybe being a bit cooler will be good.  But really, what do I know?  I'll be happy if my arms don't fall off by the end!

Funny, I was thinking it would probably end up being warm enough that it might not be wetsuit legal.  I never even considered cold water!

That lake must be spring fed to be that cool.  It seems everylake I've been in in the vacinity of Patterson and Half moon has been at least 78.  With temps this weekend in the 90s it seems crazy that that lake is so cool.  I guess I'll have to check and see how warm half moon is.  Thanks for the intel.

That was one of my main worries was the warmth of the lakes, I'd prefer 65-70 area for that length.  Mid to upper 70's could hurt me, but I'm kinda of hot blooded and actually wish USAT would lower the temps by 4 degrees for wetsuits.  I hate them when the temps are borderline.

Does anyone know if there's an aid station, or should I stuff a gel in my shorts???

It says they will have two aid stations with water, HEED, and Hammer Gel.

I won't be wearing a wetsuit - we are doing the team competition, and they require everyone to swim in the non-wetsuit division.  If the water's warm, I'll be glad for that!

Great!  I thought I saw there was an aid station but couldn't find the info while looking around the web site.  Sometimes I'm to type A and inpatient

I had swim class last night at Silver lake and the swim coach said she swam the entire swim to the moon course earlier this week and she said water temps were about 80.  I'm not saying don't pack your wetsuit I'm just passing along the info.  See everyone next weekend.
