Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30 and got dressed and headed out. Main goal of the race was not to hurt the back. Not planning on doing the bike and run too hard but wanted to swim hard. Was going to make it more of a training race. As I got on GB 190 I saw a guy with a bike racked. Figured we were going to the same place. So I started racing him there. Had to stop at Dennys to drop the kids off at the pool and meet another racer.
Event warmup:

Swam a little just to warm up the arms. I wasnt rushed so it was a fun morning.
Swim
  • 13m 19s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had debated between wearing the wetsuit or not. I got in the water and it was ok and I could have went with out it. I ended up wearing it. Just too restrictive in my shoulders. At the first buoy i wish I hadnt. Oh well sleeveless will be here at the end of the month. Swim went slow. This was the first time I actually got pulled back. Someone started swimming on my feet and ended up pushing my legs down repetitively so it was slowing me. Then they grabbed my ankle and pulled me back. I would have really like to speak with that guy after the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear the wetsuit or get more than 1 swim in it before the race. .

Comments:

There were strippers for the 70.3 but i didint think they were for the sprint people. As I was running by one of the TTT coaches grabbed me by the top of the suit and two guys yanked it off me. Cool. Long run from the swim. I know I was taking it slow and didnt do the flying mount like usual to be easy on the back.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 56m 23s
  • 16.1 miles
  • 17.13 mile/hr
Comments:

The roads were rough. I dont like chip seal roads. Anyways started out fine and didnt do aero for about the first 4 miles. Back was feeling ok after that so I got in aero. Dropped the chain twice on the first half. I actually rode hard on the 2nd half until the big hill really killed me. Eased it in after that. I can tell the legs are weak from the lack of training. Back felt real good and didnt have any issues. I did the out in 32 min and the back in 24
What would you do differently?:

Beside the chain I had planned on doing a moderate bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Jumped off strolled up to my set up and and got shoes, belt, glasses and Garmin swig of Gatoraid and was off. A little rough running barefoot so I didnt run.
Run
  • 32m 34s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 09m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Was going to go a little stronger on the run and see how it went. Felt ok. I drank enough on the bike so felt good. Need more fitness here. Its not the legs that give out on me its my HR and breathing. Was going to hammer the last mile and was cruising when I pulled an EvD. I came up to a lady when I was about .15 from the finish. She had me stop and ask what i was doing? I told her trying to finish. Apparently I missed the left turn about .2 back. I was following the way we went out. So as I ask her where it is, she doesnt know, I ask her what I need to do and she doesnt know. Nice lady but just didnt know what to do. She was where everyone was coming from. So I ran back up that route for a way then back then to the finish. Garmin said 3.3 so thats what I'm going with.
What would you do differently?:

Run the right path of the course.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank ate pizza and enjoyed all my friends stories.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back injury 3 weeks out.

Event comments:

Roads were hillier than I normally ride and the run was also. Maybe I need to run some hills more. Ride was rough. I am not sure if I would do another chip seal road race for a while. Overall I actually had fun. I was very dissapointed in my swim. But there is always another race to make up for it.

Nice job on the race though!  Glad the back doesn't hate you.

Man, what are the odds that both you and Emma would both take the wrong turn during seperate races.  Glad I wasn't racing this weekend, probably would have done the same.  Good job on the race.

Nice race Todd!  Sleeveless wetsuits are the way to go IMHO....  Way to hit it thought, even after the injury!  The EvD comment was funny
