"Eagle Fire" (30 acres and growing) burning 11 miles NE of Williams, moving NE-ward, toward Kendrick Mountain. Gulp. Here's the incident page with map if you want to monitor. It is really windy out there.

It's now at 200 acres and growing. Even it they contain it in the next two days the smoke in the area might be tough to beat. I can see it from my living room window... in Kachina Village, 50 miles away!

Is the fire to the north of the race site? It seems prevailing winds are out of the south, so that should help push it the other way as well as the smoke, no?

No, it's to the SW of it. Heading straight toward the race site. Rapidly. Check the incident web site I posted above for a map. Here's the latest update. A few more hours of strong winds...

Hey Meteor Crater! I love that place. Well, it doesn't look so good.

Meteor Crater?? Bryan, you have an odd sense of direction. No wonder they don't let you run in the woods by yourself more! Wink

Here is a picture I took at 4:30 p.m. from the Kachina Wetlands, about 10 miles south of Flagstaff, looking NNW. They just announced it's now at 800 acres (wow!) and there are mandatory evacuations in effect, for Spring Valley.

A couple of teachers I work with (4th grade teacher and 3rd grade teacher) are planning on doing this race with a buddy of theirs as a relay team.  I was excited for them because the 4th grade teacher, Justin, is thinking about trying out a triathlon and the Barn Burner was going to be his first race of any sort.  (I bugged him all year about how he should get into the sport because he would have a blast (He is in his early 20s and has been married about a year).  Between me filling his head with ideas at work and the friendly harrassment by some of his buddies who race triathlons, I think he was convinced to give it a go.

I do hope the race isn't cancelled!

There is a lot less smoke visible this morning from where I took the picture yesterday. Less wind in the forecast too. The fire is at 1000 acres and they're making some progress on containment.

It's official, Red Rock is postponing Barn Burner. But good for them for making an early and decisive call.

I agree. Lots of people were going to start camping there tonight. Let's hope the new date fits into all our schedules... Will be hard to accomplish.

Any idea if the Gaspin Aspens race course (at Nordic Center) would be experiencing the same plight as Barn Burner course?

It's a bit further away but in the same direction. Smoke would be the factor I think, not fire. Smoke is low in the mornings though. Maybe it'll be okay to run before the wind kicks up again. Bryan, any updates from the Nordic Center?

RedRock: Official final answer...based on input from USFS, our crew on site, current weather forecasts and the amount of smoke in the area, we are going to postpone the event this weekend and will attempt to re-schedule the event with the Forest Service and keep all athletes posted on our progress. Quite simply it would not be safe or healthy to ride in the current conditions.

Ha! The fire saved my butt! Quite literally. Just heard from my "pardner" that he broke his thumb and will need surgery tomorrow. He wouldn't have been able to race on Saturday and I would probably have attempted to ride the whole 104 miles myself...

You could do the whole 104 in the same time it takes me to ride 52!

I just signed up to volunteer at Gaspin'. See you all there.

YEAH. Perfect date for me. I'm in. I hope my partner will say the same (after breaking his thumb a day before the last Barn Burner date he had surgery but was fine at Taylor House last weekend), otherwise I'll be back here looking for a new one soon.

WhooHooo!!!! I am looking forward to this! It was a fun race last year. I am racing the Pardner race. Hopefully we can get the BIG buckle. We did it in just under 8hrs last year, so if we don't have any mechanicals we should be able to pull it off again. Oh and I have a different pardner too, this one is a LOCAL, so he should rock the course.

Who else is in for Barn Burner, besides Ryan? Any of the people originally signed up: Dean? Bryan, how about your wife? Just trying to get a sense of who to look for out in the woods... and later in the beer tent.
