Checking the website it appears the swim this year will be one way traffic only with 5 second intervals between swimmers. Everyone else agree with what I'm seeing or does anyone have other inside info? I'm really hoping this IS the case since the swim the last two years has been the one small downside for this race.

wow - I hadn't noticed that

That's a good idea, but I wish they would have the time between swimmers be 10 or 15 seconds and not 5.

Regardless, 1 way traffic beats 2 way traffic any day, provided people approach it like a highway and stay out of the left side if they are slow.

Just confirmed with the race director, the swim this year is indeed one way traffic with 5 second intervals. I must say going into the race I think this is a wise change from years past. Looking forward to see if reality matches my expectations.

So was anyone else confused by that email they sent out yesterday re: the swim and pool temp?

They said that the pool temp might be 81 degrees, yet "Bud Bonzai" was going on and on about wetsuits and skinsuits.

My understanding of the USAT rules is:
- under 78 wetsuit OK
- 78-84 wetsuit allowed, but you don't qualify for awards
- 84+ wetsuit not allowed at all (not safe)
- skinsuits/fancy non-wetsuit swimsuits/techsuits allowed regardless of temperature

I can kind of understand why he was talking about skinsuits - Bonzai is a sponsor,  he's gotta make a buck and I understand that.

But there wasn't a whole lot of "because the water temp will be over 78 degrees it means this...".

Anyone else confused?

A wetsuit is a little silly for a 400m pool swim, but I was confused also.  Maybe they just left out the you wouldn't qualify for awards thing.  I'm more confused/upset about the new no flip turn rule!  I also expect a ton of congestion only being 5 seconds apart....thats instant draft territory.

Anyone have any insight on the run course?  I (unfortunately) haven't had a chance to run the course yet but, I heard it was hilly? Is this true?

Thanks!

I just went out last week and ran it again to remind myself of the pain!  Kidding - It is indeed hilly, but not impossibly so.

The first mile is almost all downhill.  There is a decent sized long hill after the first mile, coming up onto the paved sidewalk on Weihle just after you go under the overpass.  Then a long, slight downhill for about a 1/2 mile, a slight uphill for 1/2 mile, and - since it's a loop - the last mile is pretty much all uphill, with an uphill finish.

Expect your run time to be a bit slower than normal due to the hills, unless you are some kind of running god who is unaffected by hills...

Run course: Rolling hills, slightly longer than 5K - 3.2ish miles.

Bike: Slightly shorter than 12 miles, one decent hill on each loop

Swim: Expect flip turns to be legal per an email I received from the RD

Agreed on the run course, it's hilly enough to slow your 5K run time down a bit.
Swim wise I was mostly confussed about the message stating, "no swimming under a lane". However, docswim seems to suggested flip turns (and I would expect swimming under the lane) to be back on race day.

Oh, and I'll have on my brand new Xterra wetsuit (bought with the BT discount code). I know, it's only 400 meters and it's going to be hot but I'm NOT a strong swimmer yet and the suit just makes me feel so much more confident. I'm prepared to loose all the time I gain in the water in T1, but I'm also hoping my legs will thank me later on those hills.

I think making flip turns legal is a bad idea.

My experience with races that are one-way swimming and 5 second starts is that a lot of bunching up happens at the walls with people passing and waiting for others to pass.

I think the people who try to do flip turns will find that they won't always be able to because  there will sometimes be no open space on the wall from which to push off.   I hope people are careful and don't whack people who are waiting at the walls.

I don't plan to do flip turns, but I will be pushing off and crossing under the lane dividers after that.

Wetsuits - if the water is > than 78 than you can wear a wetsuit but are not eligible for awards.

Flip turns - in my experience those doing flip turns are more experienced swimmers who are not as likely to get in a collision as less experienced swimmers. I have seen many head on collisions, running into people at the walls, etc in pool swims. I have yet to see a flip turn hurt someone in a pool swim.

Thanks for the heads up on the risk of wearing my wetsuit in that it may proclude me from an award. Unlike you doc, I know coming into the race the only award I'm vying for is bragging rights over a couple buddies and MAYBE my wife

Good luck in the race.

Good luck to you and everyone else in the race this weekend as well.

I am just happy my fiance is not racing. She beat me in the swim last year and I was not looking forward to that again.

Race report posted.

Hope everyone had a great race!

BTW - Was anyone there for the awards?  It turns out me and "The Other Jeff Davis" BOTH placed in the M40-44 age group.  I (stupidly) didn't stay for the awards ceremony and would like to know what, if anything, the announcer said about this most unusual circumstance!

Yes - they mentioned it and asked if the two of you were related.
