Total Time = 2h 34m 59s
Overall Rank = 75/167
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 21/39
Pre-race routine:

Checked in, drove a mile down to the transition area, set up, drove back down to swim start. Hung around with Tanya, Darryl, and Sarah. The usual banana, clif bar, water.
Event warmup:

None really, apart from treading water for a few minutes waiting for the starting gun.
Swim
  • 24m 13s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Best swim ever. A mile in 24 minutes! Are you freaking kidding me! I'm the guy that can barely go sub 2 minutes for a 100 yard sprint in the pool. We were going with the incoming tide, and all of the swim times were very fast. I couldn't believe it when I rounded the point and saw the swim finish - I figured I was maybe half way. I ended up going way to the right of the one buoy once again, and had to swim back in to it, probably cost me another 100 yards.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

The time is an estimate, as they lumped the transition times into the bike times. No problems with this transition, think I'm starting to get the hang of this.
Bike
  • 1h 20m
  • 25.8 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Best bike ever as far as average speed. Everything went very well, except two things. First, my partially frozen bottle of sustained energy fell out right at the beginning of the ride, and I actually went over it with my back tire. It shot off to the side of the road, never to be seen again. I did have two GUs, so at least I had something. Second problem was that I could not get the bike to shift into my smallest chain ring, so I did more standing and climbing than I would have wanted to. Otherwise, it was a great bike, felt like I gave it my best on a rough course.
What would you do differently?:

Should have tweaked the front derailleur before the race...
Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

No problems here, except that someone reracked their bike in my space, so it took a few seconds to find somewhere to put mine. Also forgot to take another gel and endurolytes with me.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to grab a gel.
Run
  • 47m 4s
  • 6.2 miles

Comments:

Great run. I was shooting for 7:30's and pretty much kept at that until the last mile or so. I'm not sure what happened toward the end. It didn't seem like I was slowing down, maybe the hills were getting to me. The beautiful thing was that I passed 20 people, and was passed by no one. Drank some watered down gatorade at a few of the aid stations, felt pretty good overall. Coming down to the finish line was awesome. There were a lot of people (compared to other races I've done) lining the street, and I was the only one coming through at that moment. Definitely got some of that "rock star" vibe, people all screaming and cheering, including my family. Kicked into a sprint the last 50 yards when I saw the clock and wanted to beat 2:35. Made it - 2:34:59.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, had some water and gatorade, watched Sarah come in, talked with Sarah, Darryl, Tanya, and Joe. Eventually had some nasty greasy food from the concession stands.

Event comments:

This was an excellent race. Well organized, well staffed, friendly volunteers or cops at every turn.

So to recap, best swim ever, best bike ever, great run...I guess I'll have to say that this is my best race ever! I beat all my goals for myself and had a great time. Really felt like the training paid off today.

You must have done your race report while still enjoying the endorphins!  What a great time you had!  All races should be so fun...and what a great time you had-all races should be so fast!  Bet you can't wait for the next one.

Awesome job Rob!  You were blazing fast on this course.  I only wish I could average 19mph on the bike for a hilly course and a 7:35 mile...come on!!  You rock, dude!

Wow!  That is like a really awesome job on the times there.  It's cool when you end up going faster than you think you can (and having the tide with you doesn't hurt either.)

Congrats!
