Subject: Mountain Man Triathlon - Olympic Distance : Official Thread

Hello to all my fellow triathletes competing this August in Flagstaff for the Oly distance.  I had a chance to ride and run the Oly course this weekend, and was a little surprised, and a lot disappointed, with the amount of wind I encountered on the ride.  Especially out towards Mormon Lake where the trees thinned out the wind got to be very challenging.  I have heard that is normal, but do not remember reading about it in anyone's previous race reports.

To those that have done this race before, is that wind normal?  It was about 20-25mph, and even had an effect on the chop in Lake Mary (that I watched from the parking lot).  Just wondering, since as a beginner triathlete I still have much work to do on my bike, and think riding and controlling my road bike would be easier than my new tri bike.

Any suggestions, comments, or recommendations?  Either way, I look forward to the event and to meeting many of my fellow triathletes.

Yup, that's perfectly normal, it's always pretty windy on lake mary. Usually picks up in the afternoon, sometimes the mornings are a little calmer. We got lucky last year, not much wind, no chop in the water and only a little wind on the bike.

The wind can be mighty fierce out there, last month there were 60mph gusts out at lake mary... and you still had the die hards out there riding! You had to lean your bike over pretty far to stop from being blown over the other way, pretty crazy.

It should be fine race morning as it's so early, wind starts kicking later in the day in general.

By July and August the wind will be less for sure. It's windiest here in the spring.

Thanks all for the feedback.  I was riding at about 8am, and the wind was pretty consistent.  But if it typically dies off in July/Aug, that is good news.

I read it has to do with the jet stream. Once its southern flank moves further south in the summer we'll be in between the two parts of the jet stream and relatively calm.

Chad, you ALWAYS run the disc unless it's not allowed. I'm racing the Half again.

I'm a little leery of the winds around Mormon Lake. I rode there a few times last summer, and it was squirrely! I ended up with a disc wheel in December. I still haven't ridden on it, but I'm planning to mount it for Mt. Man Half. I guess I should try it out on a practice ride up there.

Chad, the "issue's" of disc handeling are really exaggreated. I have never encountered any race day conditions where I felt the wind was problematic for using it. Maybe if it's blowing 20-25 steady with heavier gust would be the only instance I would not ride the disc. It's really the best option.

Just signed up for the Olympic.  The price goes up at midnight, so if you plan to do the oly better get signed up by 11:59 PM tonight or it's $100 instead of $90. Same goes for the Half IM dist...

Yeah...I'm not sure to whom you were directing that comment, but if it was at me, you'll notice I specifically called it a Half IM 'dist' (distance, if you weren't clear on that), not to be confused with a 'real' half IM.
