I was so excited for my first tri with my wife this Sunday (BASF All Smiles Tri in Wake Forest, NC). Sunday night on the way home from dinner I was T-boned by someone running a stop sign and flipped. I suffered a concussion, neck pain, and a really hurt dog who ran out and cut her feet on glass.  I've been advised by several people not to race so I decided not to do it.  Has anyone been injured this close to a race and had to back out?

I'm sorry to hear about this.  There will be other races.

I broke my foot 2 weeks before my marathon 2 years ago.  I was miserable.

I hope you and your dog feel better.

It especially difficult since it was to be your first race. Heal up and then get back training. Look for another race to do might help.

I missed my last two races a Oly and a HIM as I got Lyme's that went to my knees and had to have my knee scoped.  I have an IM in November that I hope this blip off of training will not effect me to negatively. I haven't run since May 17th...currently I can bike, swim and water run.

You need to be very careful following a concussion to avoid getting another one soon afterewards.

2 weeks (5/2/10) to the day before for my first sprint tri went for a long bike ride and wiped out because some people not paying attention on a bike trail cut right in front of me.  Busted my right collar bone and received a titanium plate and 7 screws, in addition to screwing up my ribs.  It really bummed me out (I still get bummed thinking back on it).  I had my forth physical therapy session today and I am progressing.  I started stationary biking about 3 weeks after and have been able jog the last couple weeks.  I am very anxious to get back in the pool - I was really seeing progress (when I started in Jan could barely swim 1 lap, 2 days before the accident I swam 40).

Your lucky you will be back before you know it. I have found I appreciate training now more than ever!

Yup, got sick and ended up in the hospital last year about this time, had to scrap the whole season, including 3 big races.

Glad to hear you're OK. There will be other races.  I'd say go to this one and cheer your wife on

yeah, I missed a half mary and more recently, the LA marathon this year (and I was soooo ready) due to injuries.

part of life.

The way to get over your depression is to find a new race, a new goal, and start training for it.

I can't run nearly as much any more, so here I am enamored with Triathlons.  Just find a new goal.

oh, get well soon.  sorry about your accident.  Glad it wasn't worse.

Ok, I've been feeling sorry for myself since I got stung by a bee on the bottom of my big toe tonight, but after reading this I think I can suck it up and do my sprint on Sunday. Sorry to hear about your accident.

Sucks to hear, but I'm glad it wasn't much worse.  x2 on the doctor.  If the doc says it's ok go for it, otherwise go cheer the wife on and look for the next opportunity to complete your first of hopefully many to come.

I had to bail on this morning's race due to a stress fracture. Sucks.

Glad you're not severely injured. Heal up and plan for the next race!

That does suck. There are tons of races though. Time to start looking forward to the next one.
