Sunny
Total Time = 1h 10m 17s
Overall Rank = 22/179
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/32
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3 a.m. After I was dressed I made the PB & Banana sandwiches for Tif and I to eat for the pre-race meal. Loaded the bikes and the tri bags, and made sure we had everything in the truck.

On the drive up I drank some iced coffee and had a glass of water. Also at the sandwich around 5 a.m.

When I arrived at the race site I checked the air in the tires and then rode over to transition area. Set up transition (forgot to turn on the Garmin for the bike leg) and I remembered to put my race belt with my running shoes this time.
Event warmup:

Stretched the legs and arms. Did about a 1/2 mile jog to start and then did 200 meters in the pool.
Swim
  • 06m
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

This is a frustrating swim because people do not turn in accurate times for the swim and are seeded higher than they should be and this causes a traffic jam in the pool as people are trying to get around them.

The gentleman that started in front of me was nice and after the first 150 waited at the wall to allow me to pass him, but others were not that considerate. I was behind one guy who would not let me pass and I was stuck behind him untill I could find open space to pass. I was also hit in the face on the last 50 by a guy that was passing someone coming in the opposite direction.

This time is not the best I can do and if I was not dealing with the traffic jams and an individual that would not allow me to pass I think it would have been better.
What would you do differently?:

Report a faster time so I am seeded higher.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

I had an issue with one of my socks and this held me up a bit in the first transition. My first transition is not all that fast anyways, but this slowed me down even more.
What would you do differently?:

I am considering trying to bike and run without socks. I will not have to deal with putting them on and this could make things easier in the first transition.
Bike

Comments:

I like this bike course. It is flat and the road is smooth and in good condition for the most part. They changed the course from last year and the road on the back side was a bit rough, but it was not for that big of a stretch so it did not bother me too much.

I was in the second and third hardest gears for most of the race. I really tried to keep the cadance up and push the pace. This is the first time in a race I have averaged 20+ mph. The highest I have ever been was 19 mph. I am very pleased about that.

I did feel the calves try to cramp on the bike and so I consintrated on pulling and not push the pedals....this helped. Then I felt the right hamstring wanting to act up. I drank some Gatorade hoping this would keep any cramping from happening.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty pleased with this part of the race...not sure what I would do diffently at this time.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Do not know my time because it is not recorded on the results.

Good transiton here. Everything went smooth and I found the run out with no problems.
Run
  • 28m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I really felt like I was pushing hard on the run...I felt like I was going faster than a 9:27 pace. I am wondering if my T2 time is added into my run time and that is why the pace avg. is what it is?...just thinking.

The last mile I was really pushing to keep the pace up and I even picked it up a bit. There was a lady that was in the 25-29 age group that was running just behind me and we were pushing each other to the finish line. Then with about 1/2 mile to go a women from my age group passed me and I picked up the pace to try and stay with her, but I was not able to...she really had a good kick. I did keep the faster pace and finished strong.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water and cooled down with a nice cold, wet towel. Did some stretching and walking after I was done.

Ate a banana, two bean and cheese tacos, and an ice cream sandwich.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The slower swimmers who misrepresented their times and did not allow faster swimmers to pass.

Event comments:

* I like the course for the bike and the run. It is safe and well manned by police and volunteers.

* The food and activities post race are great.

* I like that they had more room in transition this year...last year we were packed in tight.

*This could be a really good race if they could change the way people are seeded in the swim. There needs to be a process to certify the swim times so you do not have people submit times that are nowhere near their ability level. You could have individuals who have participated in the race before use the time recorded the previous year and then others would have to come in and have their time certified by swimming the distance before the race. Yes, this would take some more time and effort before the race, but it would be fair and you would have less traffic jams in the pool.

*The timing chips had plenty of issues this year.

*One of the head event personnel was rude to athletes who were trying to figure out the results that were posted that had some times wrong. However, the women at the computer was nice when asked about the times.

Congrats on your PR! It's a shame you didn't get any hardware for it. Be careful, though...some day I will figure out this running thing, and I will be on your heels at the finish line. Wink

Over 20 on the bike is great!  How much do you think one needs to "fudge" about their times to get the seeding right on a pool swim?  I had the same problem in the last one!  Over all great job - just a bit more to be on the podium...

I don't know how much to "fudge"...I submitted a time that was 30" faster than last years race and I was seeded lower this year.  I did not "fudge" on my time and I guess that was my first mistake...I will do that next year if I do this race again.
