Veteran 163 Newburgh, Indiana | Subject: What's going on here? Check my HR data Just did another brick yesterday in prep for my first HIM in two weeks. Came off a 31 mile bike with a 1 minute transition to a 6 mile run. I've done a few of these and I'm seeing a trend both with my HR and RPE out on the course. It was hot and humid as usual with temps in the mid to high 80's. Hydrated well on the bike and took in Hammer Perpetuem consistently. This particular brick I went out too fast on the run but I felt great and felt smooth. I was actually trying to hold back knowing it is common to come off the bike too fast. Nonetheless, after seeing my first mile split I backed off even more and did the same for the 3rd mile. I was kinda looking to stay in the 8:30 range. Then as I get to mile # 4 I'm starting to feel like crud. Now I am slowing down because my RPE is really going up. I'm watching my HR climb even though I am slowing down considerably. Don't get me wrong, I had no problem finishing the run but this has happened a few times now. FYI I did not hydrate or take any nutrition on the run. My question to the experienced is can you possibly tell me what is going on as you review my data below, hydration?, nutrition? etc... any input would be greatly appreciated!

You said it's hot and humid, yet you didn't hydrate on the run. You are in the middle of a 2.5 hour workout, so you need to stay hydrated. Heat, and hydration affect heart rate, A LOT. Humidity makes that heat worse. If fueling and drinking on the run is uncomfortable to you, then start getting used to cramming down drinks/gels while uncomfortable. You'll get used to it, and you'll be better off for it. |

There could be many things affecting your HR such as heat, hydration, nutrition, poor pacing on bike and run, topography, etc. Best thing next time is to try sticking to your pacing plan early on the run and use RPE to judge how things are going. Let your HR be whatever it is, sometimes it might be higher and sometimes lower depending on variable conditions. That way you can learn when your HRM is giving you good info preventing from making a mistake (i.e. not hydrating yourself) or just if it is misleading you. |

Pro 5361 | Subject: RE: What's going on here? Check my HR data It's normal to have HR creep. My guess is that you'll see this kind of creep in any of your long runs (I do). Yes, as was mentioned, it's due to heat and/or hydration. |

Veteran 163 Newburgh, Indiana | Subject: RE: What's going on here? Check my HR data Thanks very much all for your input. Still being somewhat new to the sport I wasn't sure what was going on. It's almost always hot and very humid here so I couldn't pinpoint the cause. I'll certainly be hydrating in the race as there will be aid stations available on the course. I simply haven't on my bricks due to the inconvenience of packing water. I make sure to continue to hydrate during the run portion of my next next brick. Thanks again everybody for the advice! It is normal for the HR to creep up while the pace creeps down? I did a similar workout on Saturday; 2.5 hour bike followed by 1 hour run. Hot & humid. I hydrated well on bike and run. Had to pee during both (mile 4 of run). My HR increased but pace was faster. That I'd expect but not sure about HR increasing as pace slows.
