I am thinking about signing up to do this one.

But then again I haven't done any real training in months....so we shall see.

This will be my first HIM, so I'm a bit nervous, but I have almost a year to train, so I think I'll make it.

Probably doing this one for 2011.  Need to redeem myself for my performance at the 2010 race.  This is a great course but the bike section has three huge hills.

Please define "huge". I recently DNF'ed at St. George, and the word "hills" has been scaring me ever since.

The hills are pretty big but not too long.  Several riders, including myself, walked up them.  That will obviously slow you down but it beat burning out my quads.  I was not prepared for those three hills and did not prepare properly for them.   I feel you can make it through them as long as you train on hills and get ready for them, which I will do for this event.  I did not at all for this race and payed for it.

Run course is very flat and runs along the beach.  Beautiful run course.  Swim is very calm in the harbor.  Salt water was a bit of a new taste.

Great race.  Highly recommend it.

I'm really considering this...in place of some other races i'm not going to be ready for.

Does anyone know how fast this race fills up?

I think Kim & Dean said they tried to register last August and it was already sold out. That's why I registered as soon as I had the cash!

Dean and I just registered for Oceanside -- eight days after the fees went up! Oh well, at least we're in!

With so many people going, I was seriously swayed... I went as far as to click on the initial Register link. Then I realized it's the week before my 50 mile run. blah

I think if I do a half next spring it will be:

Ooooh! I wanna do the 70.3 in Hawaii SO BAD!! I love it out there (I'm a sucker for the ocean!). Definitely on my list of "Races to do Before I Die".

OKAY, i'm officially IN and also officially broke! Man this sport is expensive!!! I seriously went back and forth about 6x trying to decide if I could afford this race, but with so many great friends doing it....I just couldn't say no. Now I am super excited, time to get some training time in!!

Why can't it be one week earlier so it falls on Chandler spring break and I can force the family to go to CA for the week?

Anyone have a feel for when this race fills up?
I've gotta' get through my next few months of training/races, then decide if I want to train for oceanside, or the LA marathon (a week or two prior).  Would like to put it off as long as possible.

I think it sold out in early October or end of September last year.

I'm still debating between this one and Vinemen. I guess I need to make a decision quickly. Does anyone have a gps elevation on the bike course? I'm looking for how steep and long these "hills" are.

The race has sold out earlier in each of the last three years. You can find an elevation chart on the official website.

The hills are no joke. You will want to train for them

I've done the Vineman, but not Oceanside. I can tell yout this about Vineman: there are some rolling hills, but nothing too crazy. But there is one BIG one you need to be prepared for. I didn't see a lot of people walking their bikes up that one, so it's nothing you can't handle. But it would be wise to train on rolling hills for Vineman, if you do that one instead. Another thing about Vineman - the roots from the massive amount of trees out there cause a lot of cracks and bumps in the asphalt. It's a very bumpy ride! The scenery is beautiful, but I'm not sure I ever want to do Vineman again just because of bumpy ride. I lost a water bottle after hitting a small pothole at 30 mph. Grrr!!

I signed up today.  People in the California thread said it is close to selling out.  Here is the California post from Sunday:

"Just checked today, total entrants are at about 2175. Last years total was 2225, 09 was 2115. If anybody is on the fence, now may be the time."

I don't know how they know it is filling up but I believed them.

I don't know if I can register this soon. I already have to come up with the money for my wife and I for PF Changs, Amica and 5k for her. Damn this sport sucks money fast.

Maybe I'll sell some blood.

Todd - This is a great race and a great way to stay motivated during the holidays.  I vote you go for it!  The other events are training days for this one!
