As a first-timer, I will likely have plenty of questions for all you veteran IMers. What training plan is everyone using? When are you likely to start IM specific training? What do you recommend doing in the off-season to prepare? I'm a newbie too! I decided to use the competitive program in Be IronFit by Don Fink. The IM specific training starts in December if using that program. Right now I'm trying to get used to working out all the time again. I'm riding lots of miles and getting some hills in and I have a couple of centuries on the calendar. Swimming is my weakest sport, so I've broken down and will start swimming with a masters' team next week. My stroke needs a lot of work....I swim like a little kid  Not as worried about the run training, as I come from a running background and have completed 5 marathons...just not after a super long bike ride!I'm really, really excited! |

I really want to do this IM, but I still need to conquer my first IM later this year (IMAZ). I am way behind on training as I returned from Afghanistan later than expected. Would it be crazy to sign up for IMCDA without completing IMAZ yet??? |

I'm going to take training a bit more serious this time around and see how far I can really push myself. Looking forward to the next 11 months with a lot of races in between (Aug-Nov: 3 marathons, half-IM, oly-tri, 20k run) I'll be keeping myself plenty busy  You're gonna kill it this time. IMCdA 2011 is the first tri I've signed up for, but I'll certainly be doing some races in the spring to get tuned up. I'm in great shape now but working on building my fitness level back up to where it was a year ago during the next few months (it won't be easy due to work but I don't really have a choice), then hitting it hard starting in November. |

I was wondering if any of you know what grade percentage the steepest part of the bike course is. I am lucky in that I live in an area with all hills / mountains and very little flat land. Training for that begins essentially right after I finish my first half iron in a week! Eeek! Joining the master's team is a great idea. I started with one at the beginning of summer and it really really helps having someone not only critique your stroke mechanics, but also having others push you to swim fast. If I'm in a pool on my own, I get in a zone of really s.....l......o.......w swimming. Not so with others twice as fast as you coming up quickly behind you in your lane! |

Is that so? I thought that was the requirement if you happened to win a Kona lottery slot, but I didn't know if that was the case for the other IMs. |

For me, I come from a running background but am probably a good 35-45 pounds heavier than I optimally want to be. My biking is coming along okay, my swim is horrid. I am doing IMWI in Sept. and then plan to work really hard on body composition over the winter along with my swim and bike power (yeah just a few goals ) and hopefully come spring tie it all together with some big volume weeks and turn it into a great race.Who's next? |

I started tris/running kind of all at once. I need to work on my swim as a few minutes faster would be great, so I'm going to get in with a Master's team and see if that helps, and if not find a swim coach to help me out. As for the bike, I can build the mileage, but the biggest thing for me will be building my climbing ability. I want to be able to attack those hills with relative ease. I can do the run and will train to have a good run, but I know that lots of that hinges on my bike--so hills will be on my personal menu a lot in the next year! |

ps - i am in for 2011. i have checked on hotels and b&b inn's. hotels range from 179 (la quinta) to 265 (holliday INn). b$B are 195 to 250. the renolds house is very nice and has alot of extras but runs alot higher. ALL B&B HAVE OPENINGS AND all hotels have openings now. I looked at b&B in post falls and were not much less than cda. Katies wild rose inn has roms for @200 and is at the run turnaround so your family can see you 3 times. The greenbiar inn is very close and @195 but no "real" breakfast - fruits and bread. the CDA resort is your best bet if you have the $$$. And I do mean the $$ 4-500 a night but no way you will find better or closer. I volunteered last year and parking on race day is not that big of a deal imo. Lots of side streets and not a long walk to get to the race. Anyone who can fly into cda and wants to ride the course prior to the race can rent a bike from the two wheeler deeler in Hayden and ride the course for 30-50 dollars. I lucked out and met some folkes in cda while volunteering and staying with them. |

I volunteered at CDA this year and had a blast. The town is really cool and has a good vibe. Also great for spectators since your go through the middle of town 4 different times. Shooting to knock off 1 hour from the Florida time and hopefully hit the 11 hrs mark. Nothing too fancy this year. I actually think doing an HIM prior to my first IM would be a good idea, though the only two that'd work well would be Oceanside and Rage in the Sage. My work sked is crazy that time of the year so it might be difficult to squeeze one in. |
