I was not excited to read this article.  Essentially "there is substantial evidence that the heavy training and racing carried out by endurance athletes can cause skeletal muscle damage. This damage is repaired by satellite cells that can undergo a finite number of cell divisions."

Until they figure out how to re-lenghten our telomeres we need to think about the long term effects of our training.

Tri may not add years to my life, but it's certainly adding life to my years.

I want to go out like a NiCad (strong up to the end), not an alkaline (long, slow decline).

Did you know salt causes hypertension?
Eggs are horrible and will jack your cholesterol if you even look at them.
Saccharine causes cancer.

Those are along the same lines. Wait until 10 years from now and people will laugh at what is passing for the unvarnished truth today, written by people with some agenda or other.

Stop the Presses! Training a ton and Racing hard can be bad for you!!!

Thank Science for that information

Then again, when I was in college I wasn't pleased to read "Drinking until pass out in your own vomit" could be bad for you.

I'll let the secret out of the bag... on a long enough timeline, survivability rate for the average human is 0%

I think John Bonham and Keith Moon proved that one

I must have missed the part where they said endurance training will result in an early death...

I have a living example of someone who has been a high endurance athlete for over 30 year, my Mom. She certainly can't go as fast as she used to, but she can still run 8 miles a day. The article seems to say that your perfromance will diminish and I agree with that. Someone with that amount of volume will likely see a faster decrease in performance than someone who began enduarnce training later in life, but I don't see the whole die young thing.

The length of your telomeres is co-related to aging more or less.  Each time cells divide the telomere shortens (again, more or less). So the idea that we are being extra hard on our systems means we won't live  as long.

For those interested there is an idea that if we can live another 20 years we will be able to live forever as advances in medicine that are in the pipeline will come to fruition by then.

I plan to skid into my grave with a bunch of road rash....or maybe I'll run until I collapse into it....or jump into the ocean and swim until I become fish food....

X1000....I add life to my years, however many I may or may not have left, I plan to push myself as far as I can.

Being concieved causes death.

x2 I was 284 and couldn't run more than 60 feet playing slow pitch softball. I look at life a whole lot differently now. The real question is who would want to live forever? The beauty of life is that it is a finite amount of time. Live it to it's fullest.

who would want to live forever? .

who would want to live to 150?  ask anybody who is 149.

i bet people 1000 years ago would have said "Who would want to live to be 50?"  I'm guessing there are a few BT's that are 49 and wouldn't mind making it.

Even if you don't want to live forever, it would be nice to have that option. IMHO

I think you're missing the point.  Almost everything is bad for you in some form or fashion or if done to excess.  I would think training for triathlons and other endurance sports better than sitting on my rear end eating CheezIts all day.  I've done that before, it's not pretty.

Not to mention this and lifting weights is an outlet for me.  An outlet for my daily stress and a way to escape from the grind that is my life.  If it shortens my life so be it.

I'm 52.  Longevity runs in  my family.  Most live to be 90 to 100 years old, if they don't destroy themselves along the way with certain behaviours or acts of god.    My goal is to live be be 100 and not be "old" until I am 99.  I am going to, or die trying.....Cool

OK let me clarify the article for those who are talking about sitting on the couch as being the only other option than Kona Laughing

MODERATION!

The article suggests that hard cardio work outs are good but endurance time/distance are bad.

I don't like the implications any more than the rest of you given I just finished a HIM and was contemplating a full.  However, I'm also not going to ignore new research as it comes in.

I don't think your article supports your title nor would I worry about shortened telomeres.

I have to laugh at this...During my first sprint duathon this summer I started next to an 80 year old guy, who finished just fine....then I did my first 10K with my 61 year old mother later this summer.  I guess some people dont get the memo about shortening their lives.  haha.
