Subject: Annual Madcow Question

OK, I have asked this question twice before over the last year and I think it is time to ask it again. I am always fascinated by the answers. If you have answered before, please feel free to answer again, especially if your answers have changed since the last time.

Here goes:

You are in a race and  for whatever reason you find that the only people remaining on the course are you, another triathlete and the guy picking up the cones behind you. You and the other person pace each other back to the finish and during your run you find out this is his/her first race. You two finally near the finish, you get to the last few hundred yards and see his friends and family cheering. The other person starts his kick. Do you, leg it out and finish first or pace with the other guy but let him/her have the glory of beating someone in the race?

Thanks, Tom

I run with that person and encourage them to keep going. But if they poop out, I keep going.

I actually did something like this (but different). As I was approaching the final turn into the finish strip during my tri this weekend, I was passing a girl who was doing her first triathlon (she saw her friend on the sidelines and yelled something about not forgiving her for making her do the tri). She looked like she was in pain. I slowed down and started talking to her, telling her she looked good. I said "Come one, we'll do this together. You're almost there. It'll be over soon." I almost grabbed her arm to try to pull her along with me (think that would have been a bad idea). She eventually started walking and told me to go ahead, so I went. I wasn't willing to walk at that point (had done enough walking that day!).

To answer the last part of your question - I do not let them win. They have to get the win because they beat me, not because I let them.

Well, seeing that I have not done one tri yet I really can't talk. However, I would help her/him to the end keeping them company and encouraging them to finish. It's all about having fun for me, anyway, not so much about finishing times as of yet.

I'd definitely let the other person beat me (but not by much!) and I'd most likely be crying because I am a sappy person when it comes to stuff like that.

One time I did an MTB race (Iceman Cometh) which is in the winter in the snow. I came up on this big goofy sweet guy working his tail off just to get through the race. He had on a rainbow afro wig. He was at least 300lbs. He didn't think he could make it, but I stayed with him and we had a blast and finished DFL with the motocross bike on our tails for the last 5 miles. Near the finish he ripped his shirt off and finished bare-bellied and just so thrilled to be there - I encouraged him to cross first but he insisted we do it side by side.

Well...If this happens at my first race in September and its their first race too...We're racing....
But if its sometime next season when I've done a few...We're racing..I'm not letting some newbie beat me!!!

hehe...but rest assured, I'd slow down for a sec to say something nice...no need to be mean while i beat them...

If he'd been giving me some sob story that pulled at my heartstrings, I might let him cross the line a split-second ahead of me, because really I don't care where I come in. But if he races away from me and we've been pacing each other this far, then I have no problem actually trying to chase him down. Assuming I have enough left to kick, I'm going to race him to the finish and do my best to cross first. I wouldn't want somebody to "let" me cross first, my family is going to cheer for me if I'm DFL or MOP or wherever, and if we're the last 2 people in the race and his family is still cheering, I assume they will cheer him no matter what happens.

Great! My first tri is next month and now I have to worry about beating the cone guy! I hadn't even thought of that! Anyway, I'll take this from another perspective. If if is me that you are running with and it is my first race, please don't let me beat you. I would rather finish dead last on my own then have someone let me beat them. Unless, of course, you ARE the cone guy then get the heck off the course and don't make me feel like I am a big loser!

Do I *Feel* like running at this point? How has the camaradery been? Are you jabbing eachother jokingly about who gets to be last and offering to buy the winner dinner? Or is this person about to fall apart and quit if they are last? If it's me then jam on the juice and buy me a burger and a beer. If it is someone who will be emotionally devestated and you don't give a rats patoot about whether or not you are last then push em but not too hard and congratlate them with all your heart.

No, the cone guy goes after the last person. Who cares if you are last? You will be a TRIATHLETE!

I kick it up and beat him - I'm too competitive to give in, even under those circumstances.

Tough question.  I would hope I handle it the same way that I did a similar situation during my first marathon.  This was not for DFL, but just a couple of BOMOP'ers.  During my first marathon (Disney 2002), I was doing great up to mile 22 when I came across another Team in Training person from another state.  I actually passed her before I realized that she was crying heavily and was struggling with the thought of not finishing.  I turned around went back and got her...we walked some and ran some for the remainder of the race.  We even stopped for a photo at the mile 26 marker....then jogged the rest of the way, but at the line, I just stopped.  It wasn't something that I had thought to do along the way, it was a reflex, I had to let her cross the line first.   Even though I could have run a faster marathon time, there was a reflex in me to give up the race for myself and to do all I could to see her cross the line.  To date it was my slowest marathon (5:41), but it still ranks as my most enjoyable one.  A set time goal just wasn't important at that point.

As long as he was pushing it pretty hard so it wouldn't be ridiculously obvious, I'd let him nip me at the line.

guess that kinda contradicts my current sig

My first thought was "if  he was a pleasant guy/gal"   maybe.  But than I think of all my recent finishes.  I sprint like it's the Olympics,  if his sprint is better so be it.

What about getting a lead and than running backwards and let him pass you by a foot.  But everyone saw you humiliate him?

You're right. I shouldn't care about being last as long as I finish but it would suck a little to be last if the course is being cleaned up and most of the crowd is gone. I saw a race a few weeks ago and the darn cone guy was right on the heels of the woman who was last. It would be a little disheartening but thinking about it is motivating me to keep up my training!

You give it all you've got. You're either going to win and push the other person to train harder to not be last next time, or you're going to be last because you burn out, and you'll have to train harder to not be last next time. You always have to race against yourself as well, which makes this a 4 person race (you, yourself, the cone guy, and the other person). Get the best time that you can, and shake hands with your opponent when you both have crossed the line.

easy answer:

if i were the newb i wouldn't want any smarmy asshole GIVING me a win. newb or pro i want to earn my place damnit.

as such i would not LET the other person win. i would race MY race, against MY own time and aim for the ever present new PR. all other competitors should do the same.
