I always keep a horse at my side just in case this happens but someone just told me that bears are faster than horses.  Is this true?  I'm going to look like a fool if it is.

You my be in trouble anyway, how big are your doors?

I'm in the process of getting quotes to have all the doors in South East Queensland adapted for a horse and rider.

Believe me it's not easy getting anyone to take me seriously. Especially when I tell them it is to evade a bear attack.

Just tell them it's a koala bear and then they'll understand.

Wait, so now we're assuming the bear knows karate as well?

Personally I would throw a can of Spam at the bear. This would probably confuse the bear immensely because it looks like some kind of meat but clearly tastes nothing like any meat the bear has ever heard of.

Is the bear a liberal or a conservative?

How does he feel about welfare programs?

Is he a fan of Obama and Pelosi?

What religion if any does he align himself with.

I'm sorry but without answers to these questions, I cannot answer yours!

Also I am pretty sure you are just trying to seperate the bleeding heart liberals who would give their life to feed a hungry bear even though he can't or won't hold a job, from the staunch conservatives who wouldn't have to run at all because they have a loaded .38 in their desk drawer. Really, you could just ask people where they stand instead of using the old smoke a mirrors tricks!

Dude Really!!! Get a Big Boy gun!!!

Really...there is an old Alaska story. Two guys debating the merits of handgun calibers... 450 vs 500. They turn to ask the ol timer. He replies "well they are both ok, but make sure to file the front site off." They say why is this...to enhance point blank instinct aiming? He says "nope...it just hurts less when he shoves it up your Azz."

A griz can hit 42 mph...if he wants to catch you...he will.

WELL THAT'S MY THEORY OUT OF THE WINDOW. HORSES TYPICALLY HIT 35 MPH.

OR IF I HAVE MY DOLLAR ON IT IN THE MELBOURNE CUP, 25 MPH.

Yep those big boys can haul azz. 42mph=about 20 yards per second. So...one-mississippi SMACK! In fact the speed is so intimidating that a course taught in BC about griz defense, they set up a 55 gallon drum on a cable and run it at you at 40mph, and arm you with 12 gauge shotgun, most people, even those with lots of gun experience, miss. Imagine the real thing!! (context...i did a griz hunt in the Yukon with a longbow...no I didn't succeed, but one thinks a lot about these things)

To go back to humor: a hunter gets off plane at Kodiak. Meets guide. Guide has 32 cal (now that is a toy...I had a guy shot 5 times by po'd wife with 32...did well) hunter says "that is a little small to shoot a bear with isn't it?" Guide: "gun is to shoot you in leg...much lighter than bear gun and more successful." And...while that is funny, it is a true story.

Well, I'm traveling on business and got upgraded to a suite (sweet!) and any alleged bear in the room that would start darting towards me would have such a high degree of sophistication so as to stop and ask how the chipotle mayonaisse is with the sweet potato fries.

MMMMMMMM sweet potato fries...they go really well with a Sam Adams...

So, yeah, Mr. Sally Boy Bear wouldn't be able to catch me - unless he was pissed that I ate most of the fries.

Seriously - even I am on trinnas's side.  A .38?  Don't let the bear grab you by the skirt on the way out the door there, nancy.

Anyway, this is the number one reason I work with students and residents.  Someone to throw at the bear, and then make my escape.  Age and guile will always win over youth and agility.

I always carry around 2 guns with me

Yes, but are they Big Boy guns or just little girly pea shooters???

Well you see... much like trucks, some men feel the need to compensate for their "lack" in other areas. I myself do not suffer from any "lack" so my .38 works just fine. My condolences to anyone who does suffer such lack (cough *gearboy* cough).

Just because I drive an SUV and a motorcycle (not at the same time - though how awesome would THAT be?) does NOT mean I am attempting to compensate for anything. Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".  Which I do sometimes smoke.

Honestly you Americans!! What is it about having so many guns.? What ever happened to a good old fashioned tear-up with bar stools and pool cues? A big gun doesn't make you more of a man, it just means you have something more to hide behind.
Ask a marine, he will prob say the best way to take care of someone is quietly so as not to alert the rest of the enemy, not with a massive 44 magnum. (they will prob argue that now, haha)
Should point out I used to own a shotgun for clay shooting and am not anti guns at all but cant see the point of owning so many just to say you have them. you dont go hunting with a 44 magnum unless you are hoping to explode your target and scare off all the other prey. Cant eat an exploded bunny.

As for the Bear. Its a big office and the door is 3/4 of the distance in my favour. I think I would be bear food if they can do 40mph, I run like a sloth.

great thread though some real funny COJ people out there

btw Likely the Marine will tell the the right tool for the right job there are times when stealth is the right way and then there are times when a hand cannon is quite effective.

.44 mag, not a massive gun.  A .50AE, thats a massive gun.

Try you pool que on the bear go for it I dare you.

Lastly remember it's not the size of your peashooter but the penetration of your bullets that counts.

Yes apparently the bears turned out to be completely docile, not the best trait for a guard bear. Perhaps they were using too much of their own product.

Try you pool que on the bear go for it I dare you.

Lastly remember it's not the size of your peashooter but the penetration of your bullets that counts.

Don't get too hard on him Kate.
Just like a Brit to bring a pool cue to a gun bear fight (snerk)

I think he did not understand my joke about always carrying around two guns with me.

That was a joke?
OOOOOhh

 (Kate...you said penetration.....)

Wow stirred up a couple there didn't I. wasn't meant to be serious, more of a gentle wind up that seems to have worked well. No offence meant and will make sure to use red font next time. Love the peashooter comment as well.
please carry on this is a great thread

I just heard on the radio today that someone was using 15 black bears to guard their illegal marijuana grow operation. Pretty good idea eh?

And yes Trinnas, my .357 with hollow tip bullets penetrates just fine.

Sorry to hear that you have hollow shots.

Pfffttttt Canadian, shesh!!! They're Hollow Points, preferably fully jacketed.  Black Talons will do nicely if you can find any.
