sunset racing
86F / 30C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 45m 38s
Overall Rank = 33/46
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 3/3
Pre-race routine:

i had an english muffin with peanut butter, a powerbar and two bottles of water.
Event warmup:

i did a little stretching and a little talking, as usual.
Swim
  • 15m 39s
  • 800 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

this was probably one of the best swims i've ever had in a race. i did pretty well with sighting. my breathing and stroke were better than ever, which i was psyched about! i think i felt more calm than usual.
What would you do differently?:

learn to draft better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

t1 went smoothly and there was nothing of note.
What would you do differently?:

eat some gel before i got on the bike.
Bike
  • 53m 36s
  • 12 miles
  • 13.43 mile/hr
Comments:

this is where i fell apart. from the second i got on the bike, my quads were locked up. i was really sore all week from the two little workouts i did and i guess my muscles were still really fatigued today. the other strike against me (and a number of other racers) was that the volunteers were not at the first turnaround and i went about a mile out of my way and then turned around. we only learned where the actual turnaround was on the second loop, but the snafu on the first loop really screwed with my head. i knew that my biking was poor to begin with and that put me at least a few minutes behind a lot of other racers. throughout the bike i think i just got progressively discouraged with my race.
What would you do differently?:

uh...taper.

i'm going to get pedals and shoes within the next week so i'll have time to learn how not to tip over and clip in/out before my next race. i'm hoping that will make some sort of improvement to my biking.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

there was nothing of note in t2 except a spectator getting in my way while i was trying to get back to the rack. i remembered my race number this time.
What would you do differently?:

throttle the spectator and get some of my biking aggression out?!
Run
  • 34m
  • 3.2 miles
  • 10m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

i didn't know i ran this slow until i put the numbers in just now. i thought my run was better than this. oh well. i really blew it today. anyway, i felt okay on the run, although i walked a few times. by the time i made it to the run it was hot and humid, so whatever water i didn't drink i poured down my back. that seemed to help.
What would you do differently?:

put a rocket in my pocket.
Post race
Warm down:

drank some cytomax and pissed and moaned about the bike course with some guys i met.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

i was just too fatigued. i really need to learn about muscle recovery because i shouldn't have been as sore as i was for the entire week. i did a long run on monday and worked out and i biked on wednesday, but i didn't think it would take so long to recover from it. i'm a little confused by that.

Event comments:

this race was less organized than the first two. it was postponed from two weeks ago and maybe that had something to do with it.

in summation: it was my worst race ever and i got a ribbon for third place!!

Good race Cristin, despite the troubles. Take it in stride, you learn something from each one. Hey at least you got a ribbon out of it! And you got out there and raced instead of sitting home watching TV...that's gotta count for something!
