Subject: Tri Clubs in Atlanta
I made the resolution this year to fully commit to racing several triathlons, duathlons and lots of road running races.  I want to do it with a group but havent been able to find information about any other group in Atlanta than the Atlanta Triathlon Club.  I went to one of their info meetings and loved the benefits and what they are doing as a club but I just dont think that the locations they workout in are practical from my house and work.  I also tried to get info on the other tri clubs here like North Atlanta and Get Fit but the websites seem to be locking me out.  The Peachtree Tri Club seems like it might be a good fit too but I just want to look at all options before committing to the entire 2011 season.  Do you know if they have an informational session?

My ideal club would be an active and large group that trains together and exchanges lots of info on forums and also has coaching available b/c my swimming stinks!  Oh ya, and social is a HUGE plus too!  Any help on how I can get info on these clubs would be greatly appreciated.  What club is the most similar to ATC with location closer to the 400 corridor?

Thanks.

Eric

North Atlanta just did a website revamp so that is probably why you wouldn't have been able to get onto it.

As far as "informational meetings" go.  You can always attend a monthly meeting, meet some people, and decide from there.  ATC is a slightly different beast than other area clubs due to their partnership with Atlanta Parks and Rec.

I'll PM you some more info on NAMC so as not to sound like an infomercial Laughing

Eric & Meredith,
The NAMSC website is currently in the middle of a redesign for the 2011 tri season.  However I've moved the majority of the content into the public view today at http://atltri.com if you would like to take a look and find out more about our club and some of our activities.

I'll 2nd NAMC. While not a member, I have a friend who is. I supported her at Augusta in '09 and they had a fun scene going on from the night before through the post race celebration.

I've heard sketchy things about Atlanta Tri-Club.

Get Fit is a great group too. I know the owner / founder and have been to a couple of their socials. Amazing stories of average people doing incredible things! Check them out for sure. If you need help contacting them, let me know and I'll hook you up. They're on Facebook too.

Will you keep this as the new URL? If so I'll update it on the Clubs/Teams page of the Georgia Triathlete site.

Kerry,
We'll keep the http://atltri.com/ as our new address.  It's much shorter to type. The old more descriptive address will continue to work as well and be automatically forwarded to our new address.

Many members of our club use BT frequently, so we also added a shortcut to the BT Georgia Forum at http://atltri.com/ga

I hope everyone likes the new site.

Justin

I rarely post on here, but I felt I needed to respond to this post.  I don't think that it is fair of you to say something like you did about the Atlanta Tri Club in a public forum like this when you are not involved with it.  My wife and I have been involved with ATC for 2 years and have had a great experience.  I'm sure other clubs offer an equally positive experience with great people involved too.  If I heard something negative about another club I wouldn't post it here...there are many people that could miss out on a great experience due to your biased and vague description of the club.

I don't find this to be an objective comment and feel like there is possibly another motive.  The clubs that are mentioned are all great because they provide a group setting to train.  I've been a member of both the Atlanta Tri Club and Get Fit.  There are "leadership issues" with one at the highest level and this posting is most likely another example of this issue.  Please be honest and objective to help promote the sport and to help people that are looking to be involved in the sport.

WTF.  PM me with the SPECIFICS of why you posted this comment.  To make a statement like that better be based on something concrete.  As they say in Texas, mess with the bull, you get the horns.

I think its a fair comment if there is good supporting data. However, thecaptin is right to ask the question.

I am not one for a pollyanna forum here. We should be entitled to express criticism if warranted and we tried to deal with it in a grown up way first.

And I always thought that quote came from the breakfast club

I have had an association with at least three of the clubs mentioned throughout this chain of posts. Each club had some great things to offer, but each club was a bit different, so my only advice is to take advantage of attending some trial "events" with each club and decide which one fits your needs and wants the best.

Good luck with your resolution. I hope you enjoy your training and the local tri community.

When I first started out in endurance sports I joined Get Fit Atlanta. At the time I was only running so I was involved with the marathon program mostly but then started to swim and bike with members of the tri program. They have a great running program. It is a pretty big group so you will always have someone to train with. I can't really speak for their tri club but I don't think it's as big as their marathon program.

I then joined NAMC. This club has a good group of people, but it's not structured (or at least wasn't) like you (the OP) was looking for. The group workouts were not scheduled or official workouts of the club. Basically you are on your own as far as schedules/coaching is concerned. They do have a forum but it's been a while since I've been on it so I can't really speak as to how active it is. They do have a knowledgeable  and experienced group.

Next up, I joined the Atlanta Tri Club and I am currently a member and coach. So, obviously I love this club but I still think I am objective. It has everything you (The OP) are looking for except for location. We have a professional triathlete as one of our swim coaches and another top ranked Masters swimmer coaching. You would benefit tremendously from our swim program. Our forums are active and we too have a knowledgeable and experienced group to train with and learn from. I could go on for a while about all the good things our club offers but that would be annoying. I will just say that everything you were looking for we have. It's too bad the logistics don't work out for you.

I have heard good things about Peachtree Tri club and I see them at a lot of races, but I haven't been involved with them personally so I don't have anything to add other than that.

a.

I'm not going to into any details about what I posted but I guess I could have worded it better. I agree that each club is different and has a different personality. As an outsider to ATC and having been on rides with members of ATC, GFA, and NAMC and having been on routes where each were holding group rides, I will say that ATC's members were the rudest of 'em all.

I have nothing personal against ATC, I'm just expressing my personal experience with them. They do not do a good job promoting their group -- or the sport -- when they're doing a group ride all kitted out on very busy routes.

That's all I'll say. If you're a coach or leader for them, there's no need to respond here. Prove me wrong the next time I see your group.

This is an interesting thread.

I have to agree with 1111, though I never really thought before, about how the different clubs each offer a different product and have a different personality.

I will add that my experience before I joined NACM was that the people in any club were a little bit clique-y (they kept to their group) and felt very closed and stand-offish to me so I was very intimidated and afraid to do stuff with them.  Luckily, DH and Nat were not so shy and so we kept showing up at group rides and then joined up.  That is a long way to say that maybe that clique-y vibe was what pinkturtle felt with ATC.  I don't know.

I think the other posters offer good advice about checking out the merchandise before you buy.  Go to some meetings or workouts and see what each club has to offer and weigh that against the membership fee.  The tri community in Georgia is not that big, so you are bound to find someone here that is a member of each club in the area who would be pleased as punch to escort you to a meeting or workout.  Or, show up at workouts posted here or create your own to meet people that way.  You can always obtain workouts from a coach (there are several on here) if you don't want to/can't make up your own and then use your workouts as a way to meet like-minded individuals, regardless of club.

Wow - if "riding rude" is the standard, lots of cyclists (and triathletes) are "sketchy."

I  live in Avondale Estates, a major thoroughfare on the midtown-to-Stone Mountain route, and I'm astonished when I encounter a group of "kitted out" cyclists who *aren't* acting rudely, at least when it comes to obeying traffic laws. I'm not trying to start a cyclist-vs-motorist war, but rudeness is sometimes in the eye of the beholder.

I felt like I should respond to this thread too.  First of all, let me say that it is awesome having so many choices for training groups as we do in Atlanta. It's a great problem to have!

When I was first interested in the sport a few years ago, I did a lot of research into clubs. I wanted one that would be very active, have people of all different levels, and have locations convenient to where I lived. ATC ended up having the best locations from a convenience factor, plus they had a lot of members and group workouts, etc. Those things appealed to me.

After being a member for a few years, I can say it has been a really positive experience, and I have met tons of great training partners and friends. I have also had the opportunity to meet people in other clubs/groups and have found 99.9 percent of them to be delightful people who I would love to run with, or have a beer with!

Long story short, I Really love ATC, but I know there are a lot of other great clubs out there too! Every once in a while, you're going to meet someone from another "group" whose behavior you might find objectionable. Personally though,  I would never assign a label to an entire group based on a single persons behavior!

So OP, long story short, I am sure you will find a number of great tri groups around Atlanta including ATC!

One thing I would add is that the price difference between the clubs is pretty big.  The ones with a lot of coaching tend to cost more and the ones that are informal tend to be value oriented (cheap).

They all seem good, so pick the one that fits you the best.

Really bitting my tongue on this thread...I will not post what I want to post.  Keeping it positive, if you want to get the feel for any club, go to their membership events, monthly meetings or other opportunities to actually meet some members/coaches/etc.  Each club has something different to offer.  Maybe more important, each seems to be focused on different part of the city. The key to the worth of a club is the ability to do group WOs and gains some friends.   Informed decisions always work out better.

My two cents:

After moving to Atlanta from Boston, I was too intimidated by Atlanta city driving to cycle on the roads, so I stuck with running.  Luckily after three years of being in Atlanta I was introduced to ATC and it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.  It is a big club with tons of resources, some resources I use, others I do not, but it is good to have options.  It has also been beneficial for me to have teammates with a broad range of backgrounds, strengths, and experiences.  I always find myself learning from them and pushing further than I expected (in a good way) and accomplishing goals that once seemed untouchable.

I find it unfortunate that Pinkturtle has a negative view of ATC with such limited contact; I hope he is in the minority as ATC has positively impacted countless lives; I am sure the other Atlanta clubs have too.

I believe most people on the team consider ATC a second family and in my one year on the club, I can say that some of my favorite people are those I train with.  We show up to races in force as competitors and rabid spectators (heck, we had 6 competitors at IMFL and over 20 club members cheering on our teammates, the other participants, and we closed the place down at midnight).

Best of luck in your search and no matter what club you go with, have fun and please come by our tent at a race and have a cold one with us.

Cheers!
