FredsRider - 2011-02-04 8:19 PM This year I am keeping a spread sheet of all my expenses (gym, coach, shoes, nutrition, tires, entry fees  etc.). I am doing  IMWI and FL, but I only have travel for FL, since I live in Madison.

Are you crazy?!?!?  Wow, I'd be terrified of doing that.  I prefer the Ronco Rotisserie method, "set (spend) it and forget it!!!!"

And if my wife were to ever find such a spreadsheet....sheesh....game over.

Well of course I am crazy Ironman qualifies us all for Crazy !!!! Cool Computer is password protected and I have my own spending account separate from hubby  . . . . I decided to keep track after I read that article in NYTimes that said the "Average Triathlete spends about $22k a year", which I found to be Completely unrealistic.

Yeah. New bike, shoes, pedals, shorts, windbreaker, nutrition, plus 25 weeks x 13 hours/week x hourly earning potential in opportunity costs.

Hrm we drove ($300)
Only my registration ($500 or was it $550)
Stayed at a campground ($105) (me, wife and our 5 children.)

So closer to 1k with food and stuff.  It looks like you are time limited and live far away... your IM experience more expensive.

Hrm annually, shoes $200-250, Tires $150-200, gels/infinit ($100), socks $30, races $1500 ish., bike maintannace $150.  Bike was $1600 and is going on 4 years, probably good for another 4 (so $200/year).

My grand total is around $2400 a year.  A bit lower than 22k a year..

Dude, I take in that much nutrition in a week.  And my recovery drink is skim milk.  Sometimes with a squirt of hersheys.

Not as expensive as scuba diving. It got so expensive I had to turn it into my summer job. The insurance isnt cheap either. Not to mention I like to kiteboard (4 kites and they run about 1400 per kite) and I just got into the saltwater aquarium hobby over the summer. Being a teacher in North Carolina ( 1st in flight 46th in pay) doesnt help either. Rant over.

MrSolis - 2011-02-08 4:05 PM You forgot the Ironaman Store before and after the race...

x2 especially for the "first" IM... I refused to wear anything M-Dot until I'd actually done the race so I kind of went crazy after I finished. I think I got out of there with:

Pre-race:
6 cowbells (for family, couldn't find them at home)
Spare tube and c02 (flatted during practice ride)

Post-race:
IMWI tri top
IMWI finishers pullover
IM plain t-shirt
M-Dot visor
IMWI pint glass
IMWI bike bottle
IM and 140.6 bumper stickers
Silver M-Dot necklace (actually a gift from my mom)

I was completely uninspired by the M-dot gear at IMCdA (the bike kit was the most tempting, but still resistable).  I bought a pair of CdA socks, a visor for my running partner, and my wife bought a static cling sticker.  My wife did buy the photo package for me.
