Subject: Two New Triathlon/Bike Shops in Atlanta
Not sure if anyone else has seen the full list of exhibits at SEEME, but there will be two new triathlon specific stores in Atlanta:

Cadence Bikes and Multisport - http://www.teamcadence.com - Located in Sandy Springs, they are focusing on custom triathlon, mountain and titanium bikes while also providing a spin studio.
Podium Multisport - http://www.goteammultisport.com - Located in Decatur/ Druid Hills area, no content up yet, some stuff on their facebook page. 
 
Both have a facebook/twitter presence and seem to be opening within a month of each other.  Following them should be interesting.
 
What do you think about the entrance of new shops into the market this spring?
What will these shops have to do (or do differently from current stores) to succeed?

Podium Multisport is owned by Matt Cole who was the bike fitter at All3Sports until recently.

I'm all for more stores because competition generally benefits the customer.

 

Service will be key.  The one knock you hear about All3sports is that they can be snobby and elitist.  Most of the time I'm in all3sports the people there are great.  That's just the negative you hear.  Also, I don't think they can beat the prices online or at All3sports.

Agreed. I don't have much experience with All3 but I've never been impresed by Atlanta Cycling's sales staff or shop guys.  Trust will be a key thing.

All3 is a pretty solid retailer. I think that they straddle the line between being a local shop and a large national online retailer pretty well.

I just looked into Podium. The shop is only about 4 miles from me, so that is going to be a huge draw for me personally. I get nervous when I have to venture OTP.

Also, Matt really knows his stuff when it comes to bikes and fittings.

Isn't the Matt Cole situation the same thing that happened with Matt Russ when he was working with Cycleworks and running their Tri Program?  Speaking of which, I am glad there is going to be some new blood in town.  Cycleworks I feel is on the downhill from a reatiler and bike ride enthusiats' perspective, and there have been a few other small bike shops that have bit it in the last 5 years.  I still love All3 though, mostly that the only physical location is in Atlanta where I am at.  Just bought a new bike there and they threw in a fitting for my old bike for free (that I bought form cycleworks).

Matt Cole is a cool guy and I wish him real well with his new venture, and I like the idea of having a Guru DFU for fittings in Ga. Previously you could only get to one in the USA in Illinois. We are now spoiled for choice with shops.

Personally I am big on All3, where I am sponsored and my coach works. Gotta love an ATL shop that takes on an Athens athlete named Slayer and sponsors such awesome pros. Lets face it, they have one of the best selections and staffs around.

Still, I hope they all thrive...Find your fave and go where you feel most comfortable.

I think it shows how popular tri has gotten in the ATL area.   They have a chance as long as the sport is on the upswing.  I looked intot he economics of retail bike shops for an MBA course.  It is brutal.  I wish all of them the best of luck.

What's been interesting is that the bike/tri shops with reasonably priced training facilities are able to weather the storm a little longer than their competition because of the additional, consistent cash flow.  In the end, it's all about delivering a good, consistent product.

I touched base with Matt a few weeks ago about his new shop and I'm planning to go by before they open to write an article for the blog. I'm planning a similar trip to Tri Your Best when they open in their new location in Decatur. Looks like I need to add a trip to Cadence - I sense an in-depth review/comparison of tri shops in the near future.

Gary is now the main fitter at A3S.  Also Bill and Alex are fist certified as well and have been trained personally by the staff at Retul.

I have not had a chance to have gary fit me for the 2011 season yet, so I cannot personally speak about it.  But he has fit 3 of my athlete's and they have each spoken very highly of him.  I watched one of the fits to make my own impression and I think he's worth giving a shot.

Note:  I am sponsored by A3S, but get 0 kickbacks from any service or product they sell.

I know Matt Cole is still doing some bike fittings. I'd check with him and see if he can fit you in. Let me know if you need his contact info.

After a few years of tris I decided to get refit on my bike.  Went to All3 last week where I bought my first tri bike.  They spend tons of time and refit me...My original fit was great, still works and basically keep things staus quo.  I mentioned I might be interested in buying a new bike...In what I think is a HUGE nod to professionalism the folks at All3 did NOT push me to drop a few thousand on a new bike.  They suggested some options but it was low key and basically was "heck...buy it if you want one but your old bike is just fine for now..."  My point is that its their business to sell stuff but they recognized I am a long time customer and that for now, I can wait to spend gobs of money on a bike I dont really need.  You can bet I will buy my next ride from them...just because they were so honest with me now...
